Is a 2004-2005 S2000 doomed to have tranny issues?

I picked up my '04 last February and I've experienced my fair share of 2nd gear pop-out (would happen at least once a week). I only put a little over 4k miles on the car since I bought it (have another car I DD) and last month I had the transmission fluid changed with OEM fluid while it was in the shop for some other work. Three weeks and 600 miles later, I haven't had a single pop-out dilemma.

I'm certainly not an expert on these kind of issues but I wonder if fresh tranny fluid will reduce the occurrence/severity of this issue - its nice not getting the nasty surprise when she rejects 2nd gear.

The only thing out of proportion here is your overblown and apparently emotional response to my asking the question. I'm concerned only to the extent any potential new purchaser would be. If you guys here, who know from experience, respond with "Oh f@#k, it's bad", then I'll look for a later car. If you go "It's BS, don't sweat it" then I won't.

I do want to know if it's something that will develop over time. You mentioned that it either has it or it doesn't... anyone else agree or disagree?

Any really great threads out there on it?

Thanks.

My '05 has 101k miles. I keep the tranny fluid changed with either Honda MTF or GM Synchromesh and it shifts like great, never an issue.

I have a 2005 48k miles and I've got issues going from 1 to 2nd, it doesn't pop out but sometimes it grinds a little if I just trow it in gear quickly. To not make it grind you can take another second to put it in slowly and doesn't do it. Also if the tranny is completely warmed up you will not have this issue at all.

Ok, good stuff - so it's really only an issue for you when you first start driving the car, and goes away shortly after, once it's warmed up and so on? Has yours always been like that, or has it developed this issue over time?

ShortShift, somehow thousands of us have '04 and '05 vehicles without any issue. I think you'll be ok buddy. xviper was correct in his response that you are taking a tiny thing and blowing it out of proportion. This isn't like the NSX snap-ring thing where a known set of transmissions VIN's meet the criteria and it's not a recall for '04 and '05 transmissions. It's just a TSB that if those behaviors are exhibited it is a documented issue.

*edit*

I guess you probably shouldn't buy an '06+ either because of their ill-fated soft tops with tears.
