To the best of my knowledge, the '04 brakes did NOT get any "bigger". I think TireRack simply listed the same size as what was OEM and don't want to take the chance that their info might be wrong so they won't knowingly sell a 16" wheel for the new cars.

As for why the new snow tires did not work well, I surmise that it may have been unfamiliarity with the car with snow tires under those conditions. Anytime I've gotten new snow tires, THE best traction and performance was when the tread was brand spankin' new.
