If I remember correctly, the current engine in the s2000 will only pass new car emission requirements until 2009.
there's three ways they can go about building a 60th anniversary car.
1: build a 2nd gen S2000 with a new motor (or can be an updated F22), new technology (offer a dsg tranny), lightweight materials (aluminum, carbon fiber), and have it be the same price as the current S maybe a bit more.
2: build a miata, solstice type (2400-2600lb) roadster using a revised civic chassis to accomodate a rwd car, use a revised k20 motor that drives the rear wheels, use parts from the civic/rsx bin to keep the costs and r&d low, and charge low $20k for one.
3: the biggest let down would be if they make 2+2 rwd hardtop convertible and use the S badge. that would ultimately kill it for me and soichiro would be rolling in his grave and haunt whoever greenlighted the car.
i would personally love to have them go with option 1 and keep the S2000 name alive by going with what they wanted in the first place, a 2.0L inline 6 that revved high. with newer technology 10 years later it would be possible for a production car.

ugh that picture is awful.
i'm just thinking about what everyone loves about the S, and what separated it from its competitors:
1. the engine. the 9k redline.
2. go-kart handling.
3. styling.
so for a new one what should be changed?
1. i think either, as someone else mentioned, a small high-revving 6.. or a turbo 4 would be good.. either way more power is a must. the high redline was awesome, if they can keep it around 9k (10k K20..????
) awesome.
2. they don't really need to change anything about the handling, in my opinion. a little weight reduction can't hurt but if it raises the price of the car i don't think it'd be worth it.
3. this is where it wouldn't hurt to give it an update. ap2 styling was an improvement, but i'd love to see them take the new S in a whole new direction.

I agree with most of the things you stated above. A new S would only need about 280-300hp, about the same weight and handling and only a modest design refresh. I personally think the design of the vehicle is so timeless that they can just tweak the design a-la Porsche.
