I gringed second gear pretty bad today. It happend about three times. I am wondering if its because of the infamous "2nd gear grind" problem. However, I have a 2001 model and I assume that was fixed in this model. I was basically taking off pretty hard in 1st at high revs and then shifting fast. However, after the first several grinds, I paid more attention to my shifting and it didn't happen again. The strange thing is, its only at 950 miles right now, and I never really had the grind problem before. I guess I am just wondering:

1. was the 2nd gear grind fixed for 2001 models?
2. what exactly is the 2nd gear grind problem (i.e., does it only happend above certain revs, do you have to shift a certain way, etc?)
3. how forgiving is the s2000's clutch/tranny (you're experiences)? Do you really have to mash the clutch in in order to get nice clean shifts everytime?
4. was it just operator error? (I know I'm setting myself up here)

Thanks people!

Ok taxi, I don't know what makes you so sure But I'll say it again..

I have driven hundreds of cars and never had a problem with grinding gears or saw a need to practice. But that is the crappy statement made too often by some that are lucky enough to have a defect free transmission. Please face the fact that there is a problem (Honda has) and stop giving other owners shit!

Sorry CD#4 looks good to me also......unless this is a new problem. For me an experienced shifter...I F***** up going into 6th and hit reverse? Still don't know how I (repeat I) did it....or maybe the lock-out failed....are '01's effected by a lock-out failure mode.....NO, repeat..I F***** up.

IMHO of course.

RL - I too have done this two or three times (not in the same day) in my '01. I've attributed this to driver error each time, and the last time I pulled over and thought about it - I think I was letting the clutch out too fast, like before I acually had it in 2nd, I let the clutch out. Just relax a bit and pay more attention to your feet - worked for me...

You're probably right Deadp, I noticed that the car is very sensitive to when you let up the clutch, especially in 1-2 gear. My 94 prelude on the other hand, doesn't give a rats ass where you let out the clutch, I hardly ever grind in that car.

Sorry to ask a dumb question but how does grinding gear sound like??? I hear a weird noise when I'm changing gears and releasing my clutch(mostly when changing to 4th gear).....am I releasing the clutch too fast?? That same sound can be heard even if I am releasing the clutch slowly...Is it me or something wrong with this car??? Also, when I warm up my car and start driving, sometimes I have trouble putting it into 1st gear to the point where I kind of have to force it in but then this problem goes away after like couple minutes of driving. Someone please help because I seriously fear something is wrong with my car and it only has 700 miles on it. I am always worrying than being happy when driving my s2000.

I grinded my tranny a couple of times on second gear and I'm pretty dammed sure I had the cluch all the way in and I've been driving a stick since 1984.
I also had a knotchy feeling going into second and third not to mention the hard to get first problem before the tranny was fully heated up.
I told this problem to the dealer who sold me the car just to be told that it was one of the "characteristics" of the car.
Now, my car's in a local dealer to fix the missing seats (no TSB out on this.. only TTB (technical theft bulletin)) and I asked the sevice manager to take a look. He knew about the1-2 grind TSB and said that he is going to take down the tranny to see what the problem could be. I do hope that the problem is fixed because the feeling that the gear just might grind when you are shifting takes away at least a second from your shifting time. And it really feels bad when it actually does.

I'll post what the service manager comes up with in about 2 weeks or so.

Was there another TSB after the 00-055 (sept. 19 2000) on the tranny grind?
