I would give Nissan a couple model years to work any potential bugs out of the 350Z. Also, that would enable the prospective buyer to actually drive one, find out how common they are going to be, and find out which colors look best.

 

woohoo 1st ever post!! i gotta chime in since i've been debating on this for the longest time, and it took awhile to pursuade myself in opting for the s2k

after owning a sedan, I was looking into sport coupes I had it narrowed down to the 350ZX, S2000, and Audi TT
But I am sure that I'm getting a S2k (that's why i'm here)
mainly because of the reasons that are already posted:

1) s2k is convertible! 350z's will not be offering a convertible (at least not the first production) if you look at the price difference between a Audi TT Roadster and the Audi TT coupe, that's a big difference.

2) 350ZX will be a common car out there because it is more PRACTICAL, if you're into being UNIQUE, get the S2k

3) I just can't get over the styling of the S2k, can't get sick looking at it

the Z convertibles didn't look right, so if you do get a Z, keep it as a coupe - well, I'll hold that opinion until I see it. Sure, the car might be just under 30K, but with all options, I'm sure it will average somewhere around 34-36K for a hi-po one.

 

A very well equiped Z, with Nav system and limited slip, xenon etc is right at 33k. The track version which adds spoilers front and rear, brembo brakes and ultra-light 18" wheels would be about 2k more.

One equiped similarly to the S (xenon and limited slip, no nav) is right at $31k.

A well equiped base model will be under $30k.

Actually, the Z model equipped similarly with the S2000 is the "Enthusiast" model, which goes for $28,789. That's the model I was comparing against the S2000's $32,840 price. Both include destination charges.

With the S2000, I didn't need a test drive - maybe it was blind faith, but when they came out I already knew I'd get a ton of enjoyment out of how it drive. And I wasn't disapointed in any way.

I've driven a couple 300Zs, turbo and non, and while they were great GT style cars they weren't what I was looking for.

So while I'm impressed with the numbers and price of the 350Z, I'd have to test-drive one before I'd ever consider purchasing. With the "mature handling" comment of the designer, I have the feeling that, like the 300Z, it's not for me.

There will be a ragtop Z in summer 03. The closest comparison would be the ragtop "track" version. Rather than wait till it's been out a year if you just can't wait. I did this with my S even though I've been pro "H" for years. You can use the reviews of their new Altima as a gauge. It's a brand new car on a new platform. Nissan much like Honda will make improvements from year to year. Same with the Infiniti Q45 & soon G35 sedan. They make quality products. I own a 01 QX4 (MDX wasn't available in July 00 & the wife wouldn't wait till September) & have been satisified with it & my service. However having owned two previous Nissan's both my gf (now wife) & I had 95 240's, I can say the service what little was needed was horrendous. I'm sure that is not typical of all Nissan dealers. For the record, I have had no dealings with the service dept. of my previously mentioned S GA Nissan dealer. Only sales.

The enthusiast model includes the limited slip differential... Performance adds 18 inchers, vehicle dynamic control (VDC), and tire pressure monitor gauge... for $2000 more than the enthusiast.

I am going to get aftermarket rims if I do go with the 350z... and even if I don't, 17" are large enough...
