what is said above.. the synchros in your trannys aren't strong enough to consistently deal with the speed difference between moving parts when skipping gears.

Thanks a lot everyone !

I was looking for a technical reason why I shouldn't skip gears when shifting and it looks that there is one ;-).

Will change the transmission fluid and see if the grind goes away.

Banjo bolts have nothing to do with the transmission... they are for engine oil...

What oil do you guys use for transmission ?

I see that the manual recommends Honda MTF (P/N 08798-9016).

Would it make sense to replace the differential fluid also ? The manual says every 30K miles and since I just got the car and I have no idea what the maintenance history is I guess I should replace it (it has around 69K miles right now).

What do you use for differential fluid ?

Don't overlook the clutch fluid as well. I had occasional problems shifting due to a leaking slave cylinder.

There are countless fluid threads for you to refer to.

I'd say yes. Even 30K is a bit long for the diff, depending on how you drive. Never hurts to have a known starting point for fluid changes.

Hmmm. Will have to figure out where is the master cylinder accessible from.

At this point I am almost thinking that I should change all the fluids just to have a baseline.

So we are talking about transmission, diff, brake and clutch (will change the engine oil in 1k miles at 70k). The coolant is recommended to be changed at 120K or 10 years so I have one more year to go on that one.

Anything else ?

stupid question. why does changing the trans fluid make for smoother shifts? do the metal particles and dirt in the fluid obstruct the stick's movement
