Default 4.57 gears

Hello everyone just got a new S and now wanna change my gears to 4.57. How much faster will my 1/4 mile times be with 4.57 gears compare to stock? Is there a big difference? I hear getting 4.57 gears are the best bang for the buck in improving power.

There is video of 2 S's one with gears and one without. The one with gears clearly pulled ahead of the one without. The difference is very noticable. You'll lose some top end speed. But how fast do you need to go anyway? Check the other threads on this. Most people love the gears.

Some other members are going to chime in on this so ill put this out there too. How long should he wait until switching gears if the car is new? 5k mi? or standard VTEC break in (600mi) I am not sure what the break in period is before upgrading gears. Anyone?

You may not want 4.57s for an AP2 for 1/4 mile drag racing. This will require an extra shift (into 5th) to complete the distance. If you are a crappy shifter, the advantage down low that you gained with the gears can easily be lost due to the length of time to do one more shift. You may find yourself having a slower 1/4 mile time with 4.57s.
For an AP1, this doesn't apply.

There is no need to wait before installing "gears". You'll have to heat cycle them all over again anyway.

On a side note, gears don't technically improve power. You are just altering the ratio of your final drive gear in the differential. Personally I feel they are great when it comes to bang for the buck. Comparatively (compared other NA mods, or even a S/C for that matter), the improved acceleration for its cost ($/0.1second) is low.

And of course, what xviper said is also important if you are planning on running the 400meter strip. Pounding through another gear may actually hurt your time and trap speed.

Try running a search in here and in Gallery forum. There were some detailed discussions about gears. Like Blue_S2 said, there was a video that did a basic comparison -- I believe WisconsinS2K posted that video about a year ago.

Good luck.

I was wondering what kinds of changes in gas mileage may be seen with the installation of the gears, if any at all? If someone could chime in on this, I'd appreciate it.

Try running a search. I remember that a few members said they observed better to unchanged gas mileage after the gears. This may be due to more optimal engine speeds for daily driving, or due to the fact that drivers end up stepping the on the gas pedal not as hard, as there is more "effective" torque" with higher ratio gears.

Of course, you need to keep in mind that there are many variables that might have caused the better mileage (i.e. different driving styles, etc.)

Personally, I feel that the volatility of gasoline prices will have a much greater impact in your bank account than the gears will have on your gas mileage

Clutch would be considered a "repair" item and should always be first. "Gears" is a mod.

Not sure if you are into flywheels ... if you are, you might as well change that at the same time in the clutch change

But then, the S2000 already has a relatively light flywheel; I'm not sure if you can put a lighter one (one that will be noticeable in acceleration) without adversely affecting your daily drive experience due to lower inertia/momentum ...
