I don't know what's wrong with my gears and I don't actually care. What I know is they are what they are and I'm fed up f***ing with them. The thrill is gone...

Since March 04 I've pulled and installed my diff 8 times and I'm not sure what's worse: doing it 2 more times for potentially no change in anything or saying f*** it and just not drive it anymore. Have I left it alone I would have spent no money and had no agravation. Instead I got:

1 - pull diff, deliver to installer with gears $500+ + $200
2 - install diff
3 - pull diff to fix bad seal
4 - pull dakepk's diff
5 - install davepk's diff in my car so I can drive home (I'm 500 miles away at this point)
6 - pull diff
7 - install "fixed" diff $200+
8 - install borrowed diff back in davepk's car

now I face:

9 - pull diff deliver to a 3rd installer $200+
10 - reinstall "fixed" diff

That's 10 times in a year and $1100 plus the cost of the bearings, seals and washers 3 times, which I don't remember how much it was so I didn't include,in cash. Even if I did chose to go with 4.44s I'd still need to buy them so that $250 or so more.

F*** it...

6k on mine and not one problem. They whine on acceleration but the wind drowns them out after 45mph with the top down and i don't notice them. With the top up I notice them more. I wouldn't give them up however. They make the car much more "driveable"

Do you know the performance difference between an AP1 vs. an AP2 with 4.57 gears (being that the AP2 has lower 1-4 gears)?

God I'm glad I am leaving my car stock. Too much hassle for a little extra performance.

Well, the 4.77's might be a Kia Gear, but if you go through Ricks2k he can cryo-treat them for you which strengthens them beyond Stock.

The whine of 4.57 is not that bad to me;and I like quiet. If you have ever played Grand Turismo and got the racing gears, its a little less than that. The gears don't whine all the time, just at certain rpm's and sometimes during acceleration.

Remember...Performance comes at a price. Both to get the performance and what it does to the car.The result is you MAY give up some creature comfort for an adreneline rush in your car!
