In 16 months of living in Texas, I've been pulled over once, and the rest of our group here in Austin has only gotten tickets for the plate when the cop was ticketing them for a speeding ticket and mad because he couldnt' nail them for a higher speed.

I've been front-plateless since I got the car in Nov '99. Got pulled over twice. Have never even gotten a comment about the front plate.

Got pulled over once in a friend's 300ZX w/o front plate out in the middle of nowhere in west Texas, just got a warning about it. (Just got a warning about the speeding, too.)

I was once sitting outside for lunch, two cops walked by my car, one kinda chuckled and pointed out to the other cop my car's lack of a front plate, and they continued on to their car.

Overall, I'm not worried about it.

I'm assuming that the police will not ticket you just for not having front plates. They will get you for some other serious fraction and add the plate issue. So, if you drive smart, you should have no problems. My state has the same law and I've been without front plates for a year now. Just don't rub it in their faces.

I heard a rumor that front plates are no longer required in Texas. When I got pulled over the last time , I asked the nice police officer if it was true. She said that it was true, but it was not "on the books yet" (whatever that means) and it depends on where you get pulled over. As in little town=screwed. Although, it seems to me, it would be easy to fight if that is the case. I have no front plate and have been pulled over twice with no comment (on the plate, that is) Damn, why does this car like to go so fast?

The law to enact one plate was defeated a year or two ago. It has not been put back on the docket for consideration.
I have seven years in TX with only a front plate. One speeding ticket, in beautiful Ennis, and the trooper was more interested in my radar detector (did work well with the instant on and the trooper hiding between two concrete construction barricades).
I agree with the above that for the most part if you get stopped for another violation they will add the plate to the offense.

Especially in Houston. I've been stopped and ticketed for no front plate on my last 3 cars. My wife just got ticketed two months ago for no front plate too. Both cars now have front plates. Houston is getting into the money-making scheme of reducing the speed limit to 55mph, enforcing the front license plate law, and have enacted a task force dedicated to "aggressive" drivers. They need to make some $$ for all the roads that are under construction.
