Default 45000 RPM Redline!

Sorry if this is a repost/rerun, but I was watching Classic Car and they showed a 63 Chrysler Turbine Car. (If I heard correctly.) The turbine engine idled at 20,000 RPM and Redlined at 45,000 RPM's. I wonder what that sounds like at WOT? Unfortunately it only produced 140 H.P, but did have 400+ torque.

They made 50 of these and there are supposedly only 9 left in museums and owned by Chrysler. It was an experiment/test by Chrysler, but due to emission restrictions, they were forced to scrap the project. I wonder what cars would be like today if things were different?

I dont think that is possible. Ignoring that revving that high is nearly impossible without breaking something really quick, hp is a function of torque and revs. Therefore, with an engine revving that high, there should be more horsepower than than torque.

Perhaps, that RPMs that you quoted are for the turbo propeller speeds? (not sure about that)

Found the link to the site that should give more exact information. I would agree with you ITR that is sounds very unlikely, but I'll quote the article.

"Inside the car, the layout seems the same as any other car except when one notices the tachometer redlines at 45,000 rpm! Remember, this is a turbine engine and idle speed is around 20,000 rpm, and at about a temperature of 1,400

sure, sounds realistic to me for a turbine. Just think of a turbo, which spins at maybe 60,000 rpm or more. That's where the famous sound of turbo wine comes from.

hey dzfx, does your signature say that you own 2 vipers? Why did you buy an S2000? And why two vipers of the same model? Why not one GTS and one RT-10? I'm not hating or anything. I was just curious.

I enjoy being able to take the top off of any car. I love the side pipes (92-95) of the Gen I RT, but picked up the Gen II as a daily driver. I can't really use the Gen I as a daily driver since I can't exactly lock it up anywhere. The slide in windows don't protect anything. I did give the GTS version much thought. The only real difference is that I can't pull the top off. I also picked up the S2000 as a daily driver, but found that I just don't drive it much anymore. It is currently for sale: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...threadid=100756

Hope that answers your question Tapout2000.

I grew up in Detroit and as a child I remember a rust colored Chrysler turbine used come down my street almost every day. What I remember was a high pitched sound (not very load though) that the car made. Must have been a pretty cool car to drive.

I thought that I saw these cars at the Chrysler Pavilion of the 1963-1964 New York Worlds Fair. I was just a kid so I don't remember much, but I seem to remember people raving about how smooth they were. I seem to remember a whine, but I don't remember them being very loud.

I think you could get a ride in them if you waited on line. I don't remember if there was a charge or if it was free for the waiting.

Something about that 45,000 Redline just sounds appealing to me. I guess it's spillage from all the fun the S2k gives me Thanks for the history lesson Rob!

As I recall, the main reason those cars didn't work out was the excessive exhaust heat (read: flame-throwers loose on the street). No one worried about emissions until around 1967.
