I had an interesting experience today while demonstrating V-TEC after work. It was about 20 degrees out and the car had sat about 5 hours. I let it warm up "a bit" and wicked it up down the street. The engine cut out at 7K exactly. My RX7 TurboII used to do the exact same thing so I believe it was rev limitation. It did this twice. I pulled over and let the engine come to higher temp (i.e. two bars showing). Car then willingly blasted past 7K to 9K. Turned around and did it a again. Anyone know of a cold temperature limiter at 7K???

Does it say three bars somewhere or is this just "tribal knowledge"?

The temp indicator...

You start with one, wait until 3 are lit for VTEC.

I don't know anything about the rev limiter doing anything different in the cold.

I realize the three bars is the temp indicator. I'm just curious if this cold temp limiter is defined anywhere. I can't find it in the owner's or shop manuals???

I don't know if it is defined anywhere, but it would seem to make sense to wait till the car is warm before really punching it. It only takes a few minutes to get to three bars.

Rev limiter rpm is reduced until the car warms to between 2 and 3 bars. I don't think that the cutoff is "exactly" at 2 or 3 bars.
