Amazing how an accident and a lot of time surrounding it get blocked from peoples' memory when it's serious enough.
Memory doesn't just happen. The brain has to work to get it stored. When the brain is injured enough, it can't do that work. So the memories get lost. Kind of like taking pictures with your digital camera but the connection to the flash drive is broken.

Best wishes to you, Lucky.

I'm sure there's some validity to what you're saying. I guess what's confusing is when multiple hours preceding a traumatic event become forgotten when you would think they would've already been stored in long-term memory already at that point.

It is interesting, isn't it. But "long term memory" isn't as cut and dry as bits on a hard disk. It takes time for it to be finalized, and even then it can be lost if it isn't used. You probably remember what you ate for dinner two days ago, and that's long term memory, but you can't remember what you ate for dinner exactly three weeks ago -- so your long term memory has already purged that file.

Some people, though, can remember exactly what they ate three years ago. Nobody quite knows what's different about those people. And some people claim that hypnosis can bring those memories back, while others think the hypnosis is just creating the memories.

It's all very complicated and mysterious.

Like Mikey said, it does remind me of the movie Lookout.

I'm just kinda speechless after reading your story. I think it renewed my sense of seriousness in driving safety. I do really hope you get better soon and you'll definitely be in my prayer. Good luck brotha

I can attest to how weird long term memory is. I can remember parts of the day of the accident but only upto 3 hours prior. However I can not remember the 5 days prior because they were just the everyday things.

As to my knob being stolen, no nothing was stolen from the car, I took it off and the GPS unit I had I found on the floor almost under the passenger side seat. The car was immediately taken to the police for investigation so I would imagine it would be pretty untempting to steal from it.

offtopic.. but ive been reading about autistic savants who possess unbelievable memories... and people who gain other "skills" after literally getting bopped in the head. i think we all have the capability, but we just dont know how to "unlock" it.

i bought http://www.amazon.com/Born-Blue-Day-Extrao...91348171&sr=8-1
this book but havent read it
