So you were cruising in 6th gear and tried to downshift into 4th? That's where you went wrong, it's very easy to mis-shift if you try to go from 6th to 4th or 5th to 3rd.

I've never mis shifted but I never shift from 5th to 3rd or 6th to 4th.

If I were in 6th aand wanted to go to 4th I would push in the clutch, throw it into 5th first and then down into 4th to get the right angle. If done right you can do this just as quickly as trying to go from 6th to 4th and hunting for the gear. Same thing if you are in 5th and want to downshift to 3rd, throw it in 4th first then 3rd while keeping the clutch in the whole time and rev matching for the 2 gear downshift.

^ or you could go from 6th to 3rd. At 70mph thats VTEC and "passing zone"


And going from 6th to 3rd you cant misshift because 1st is locked out anyway right?

 

Don't force the downshift. Learn the car first. I did this when I first got the s2000...the shifts are so close it's very easy to do this. Take it easy until you know the car.

I shift like that! so many times i go from 5 to 4 when i want to go from 5 to 6, so i now either grab the knob like you would normally and man-handle it into 6 or do what the picture shows

 

My gut feeling is you are ok. The ap1 was a ticking time bomb that could go off that day, or 6 months later. The ap2 just tends to go BOOM on the spot .

Also someone mention revving the ap2's to 9k rpm. Not a good comparison as the tranny on the ap2's have different ratio's for the gears. 1-3 are shorter than what they were on the ap1. It's kind of like running 4.44's in the diff.

 

I'm pretty sure it's been menioned in this thread but if you mechanically over-rev an AP1, the problems may not occur until 4k+ miles after the fact... I also did a similar misshift about 2 years ago, checked my retainers and valve springs, and after those checked out ok, I didn't worry about it anymore. I guess I was lucky tho, some people really **** shit up that way... I'm sure you're ok also tho

It could have happened to anybody, even the most experienced driver. If you pulled it out of gear real fast before the motor had time to sit at redline than i think that you may be ok. If your worried about it just go get your heads checked. It should be rather cheap and easy. Good Luck

 

It could happen to an experienced S2000 driver but it is 100's of times more likely to happen to a novice manual transmission driver. Have you ever taught anyone to drive a stick shift? Think about how much they sucked at driving it.

 

He was just mad that he got cut off so he wasn't thinking and put too much pressure to the left when shifting. Going from 6th to 4th is as simple as lightly pushing up and letting it naturally go into neutral and then straight down into 4th.
