Advantage of small displacement big hp engine??
01 Z06 is 3126lb with 385hp
02 Z06 is 3118lb with 405hp
(These are curb weights)
Car and Driver observed a mpg of 17 while they were testing
the 01 Z06. (Aug 2000)
01 Z06 also has a f/r weight ratio of 53.5%/46.5%
Found a R&T with S2000 on it...
they observed an mpg of 18.5 while they were testing it
(Sept2000 against TT Roadster, Boxster S and BMW M Roadster)
They quoted a curb weight of 2790 lb and a f/r weight ratio of
53%/47%
01 S2000 brochure actually quoted 2809lb curb weight.
In comparison... 01 M3 has 3415lb (curb) and 51%/49%
01 M Roadster has 3141lb and 51.2%/48.8%
328 lb difference between 02 Z06 and S2000.
I have asked the Z06 board regarding mileage they get...the
respond seems to be in the range of 17 in town to 24 freeways...
Yes, Modena 360 makes 396hp out of 3.6liter but it also has
a gas mileage of 10/16....and IT WEIGHS MORE than Z06 at
3241lb curb weight.... not to mention it cost 3 times as much...
And the performance between the two isn't that far apart...
(But I know Ferrari is a Ferrari... no argument about that...)
I just saw some 1/4 times post by a Z06 board members at
12.35... 01 Z06 with just intake...
I always thought that the advantage of small displacement
and high specific output engine is gas mileage... It is true but
not by a big margin as what I thought it would be... I was
hoping to find other answers that I just didn't know about...

I'm pleasantly surprised to find most of you, like me, don't just blindly go around proclaiming "I have the best car ever made!!!" While a few of you are still basing your opinion of other cars like the z06 on stereotype (one guy thought it was 1000 lbs heaver than an s2000 and had a poor weigh distribution), many of you seem to have done your research.
For me, the decision was simple - the Z06 wasn't out yet when I bought my s2000 and I couldn't have afforded it anyway. But if you want to talk bang for your buck, you can certainly do better than the S2000.
I do, however, have to agee with the point about the "fun to drive" factor. I haven't driven a z06, I've only been a passenger in one. But it was apparent that there is a bit less of that race-car, fun-to-drive feel in a z06. And there is certainly something to be said for that. Of course, there is also certainly something to be said for having a car that doesn't bog at 2000 rpms in traffic.
All in all, I suppose the small engine with a relatively large punch adds to the fun-to-drive factor a bit. But my next car will definitely have six or eight cylinders (m3 or z06 - probably z06). After all, it's almost immeasurable how much a v8 adds to the fun to drive factor in other ways (sound, torque, mad hp, etc).

elanderholm,
I totally agree with you... who cares what others think... it's
your car!!
I was in the market for a new car... I looked at S2000, WRX, Z06
and hoping also that the Lancer EVO will arrive soon... My friend
laughed at me when I told them that I'm considering the Z06
simply b/c it is a GM car.... But after some research, it is not bad
at all... Z06 has more luggage space compare to my E36 M3...
It has better resale value than my car (still researching on this)...
And not to mention it performs much better (than my car)...
On top of that... 01 Z06 are selling at 6000 off MSRP and
02's at 1000 off MSRP... compare to S2000 that I can barely get
it at sticker... I think it is a very good value...
I used to look down on American big displacement, big torque
and low specific output engine as low tech... but after looking at
these data, it just doesn't seem too bad anymore...

Look at what they did to that 5.7 trying to save weight and
improve power.

10k for force induction... (though 10k will get you to 430hp)...
The car is a perfect blend of practicality and performance though
it has it's small problems... like squeaky clutch pedals, squeaky
doors & seats, early failure of rear shock mounts... it already
has tons of torque down low... test drive one, you'll know what
I mean...
A friend of mine is selling his 98 E36 M3, (loaded w/ harmon Karmman, forged wheels, spoiler, on board computer) with 15,000miles in mint condition for $30,000. Do you think this is good price?
