Why do people upgrade ignitions? What does it do differently than stock? Improve timing? Increase reliablity? Improve consistency? I have no idea... What does it do?

Sorry for the vague question, but I'm curious if it can help at all (worthwhile) because I may get a deal on one... But not if it's pointless!

I mean ignitions like MSD and HKS... TIA
