Educate me. Do you use it only to converse with people you already know, or do you accept messages from strangers? I assume you can set it to ignore strangers, right? Then what's the point of posting your username in a public place like this? I don't fully understand how this works for most people who use it.

I always accept IM's from strangers. I work about 90 hours a week (desk job) and when I have a few free minutes in between clients, nothing helps more then to have some social interaction (even if it is just over the computer). I've found it to be a good balance between keeping productive at work, and staying sane by having some form of communication.
