Default Air filter lid off

I have the air filter lid off for the very first time while driving and want to know how the F22C1 sucking air sounds like. Omg, what a fantastic sound that comes out from the air induction during acceleration.

I remember I did that one of the first few days of owning the car and loved it.

Except when you get stuck in traffic, the heat soak was super noticeable and the sound was not worth it.

Thanks for the note. I will not plan to leave it always off but on discretion.

You're costing yourself ~10 hp for some sound. Just an FYI.

The other name for most CAI is a hot air intake. If its located anywhere near engine compartment, and not better shielded than the stock intake box and rubber hose, its sucking more hot air than stock.

An alternative is to modify the stock box. Add a flex hose to the side of the box, so it brings in air from the fender area. There is a convenient fender opening right there.

A 3 inch hose gets you about half the sound volume (as perceived by ear) as lidless.

Lidless sounds great, until you try living it with it for several days, then it starts to get too loud (for my aging ears). A ducted hose tones it down just right.

personally I am not a fan of the intake sound, I like the growl you get in lower rpms, but in vtec it sounds like a chainsaw and is not very refined. I have a Mugen intake and it has a refined sound that I like, plus you don't lose power like the oem intake without the lid. A good aftermarket intake is a better option, not saying everyone would want a Mugen but lots of other options out there.

I too loved the sound with the lid off. I ended up gutting the airbox and getting a k&n drop in. Great sound and about as much heat soak as stock!

As far as I can tell by looking at mine the K&N FIPK has a sealed airbox if you follow the assembly instructions and fit the foam around the edges. The intake air comes from the front of the car, the same place as the OEM box, not from under the hood.

The FIPK is worth it (to me) for the induction sound alone and dyno tests posted on some sites indicate a small increase in peak power. Almost any aftermarket exhaust will drown out the intake sound, though.
