Default Airbox cover removal danger

Hey I tried removing my stock air box cover, the engine sounded nice, but this mornning when I left the house, my car was still a little cold, I was acclerating from 1st to 2nd and when I hit vtec about 6500rpm, the engine started choking and lost all power, but I noticed it only happens when I went about 6000 rpm into Vtec?? any ideas on why ?

Also, I heard somwhere that the VTEC wont even engage unless you use 91+ octane fuel. ?

rev limiter, you can't VTEC until the temp gage is high enough. nothing to do with the airbox

yes. never engage vtec until your car is warmed up.

You also don't want to remove your airbox - you lose power and even though I don't think affects VTEC engagement, you don't want to use less than 91 octane. It will damage your engine.

You probably hit the cold engine rev limiter. It prevents high revs until the water temp., i.e. engine is warmed up.

FYI, taking the cover off just makes the intake louder. It does nothing for actual performance. You probably lose power because your sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

It's also nice to read the owner's manual. I'm pretty sure it talks about the cold-engine rev limiter. Take a few minutes to read your owner's manual... you can learn a lot about the car.

Oh, and if you don't know where the manual is... it's probably in the secret compartment.

Does anyone know for a fact if taking the airbox cover off hurts the car in any way? I wouldn't think it does because aftermarket intakes don't use an airbox or have anything covering up the cone either.

Most aftermarket intakes route the filter somewhere outside the engine bay; if you are using a "short-ram" intake that stays inside the engine bay you are doing nothing but sucking in hot air and losing power. It probably won't hurt your car at all besides for the drop in power, but I suppose if the air got too hot it could cause knock/detonation and in-turn damage the pistons (not very likely).
