Default Almost ate it today...

Rainy morning. 5th gear, doing around 42 mph, foot off the gas as I'm about 50 yards from a spot of traffic at a light.
I gotta guy to my left tucking in behind me at close range. I'm irritated by him and watching him...have
been for the last 5 minutes. I downshift into 2nd instead of the intended 4th. It induced a nasty
spin. I can't believe the moron behind me didn't hit me as I spun right it front of him. I ended up doing a
full 360 at around 35 mph. I just happened to get onto the portion of the road that opens up very wide.

Had I not been there, it woulda been ugly.

Wow, I know the feeling. I drove an 01 mr2 for a while, which spun out doing > 50 mph after I changed lanes quickly on 495. Only I wasnt so lucky... someone smashed into me and totaled my car. But hey now I am shopping for an s2k.

Anyways, is the S2k prone to spinning out?? I wouldn't think so. When you downshifted into 2nd, were you in the middle of turning, or just trying to speed up?

Anyways, glad to hear you're ok.

Keep the rpm's low in the rain and you'll be fine. S2000 is like any other sports car, it'll spin if you don't know what you're doing, make a mistake, or push it too hard.

jds248- glad to hear you and the S turned out ok. Next time take the S out to a parking lot in the rain and have some fun .

thanks...

Actually the steering was within +/- 2-3 degrees of being dead to rights straight. I think I let the clutch out too quickly, along with the obvious mis-shift. I'll take the blame - it's my first manual tranny car. I'm just glad I was 'forgiven'. It could've been awful.

I remember when I first got the S I was taking an on ramp (raining) at a pretty fast speed and I can feel the rear tire letting go of the road and my S sliding into the guard rail luckily I was able to pull out without incident...very scary never the less..everyone out their should take it slow when the roads arn't dry. I learned my lesson that day.

what do you mean, exactly? I drove to work the remaining 5 miles and didn't notice anything wrong...only thing I noticed was it didn't want to start right away after I spun out.

I don't see why the gearbox wouldn't be okay. Didn't he say he was going betwen 35-43? At those speeds I imagine 2nd gear is not above 9000 rpms (or in his case 8200 rpms I believe in the 2004), most stick shift cars are capable of at least 60mph in 2nd.

I'd wonder why the car didn't start right after, but I'm sure someone here has better input.

Be safe guys . . . I'm looking to buy an s2000 soon and you all got me quite paranoid. What do you all do if you take it on a road trip and it starts to rain? lol

speaking of spinning out...

i actually spun out in my 2 week old S last week on a 2 lane 2 way street.. i was cruising with my friend and we just went at it for one light since the street was deserted with no cars in sight of either direction. so after i punched it in 1st gear to 9krpm, i shifted to 2nd but i think i revved it while shifting cuz i got a lil excited and plus i think for that second my wheel wasnt 100% straight so when i got into 2nd gear, i lost control and spun out in a 180. thank god i did not slam into a parked car or anything or anyone out there.. i thank god for that and really learned my lesson not to do any stupid things like that again...

and about the car not starting after u spin out.. i think its a safety mechanism built into our car that prevents us from immediately starting again right after... it took me about 30 seconds before my car would start. but i am not sure about this.. someone with more knowledge would provide insight on this.

drive safe everyone.. our cars don't need this kind of treatment!!
