aluminium spltter/nose protector
A couple of months ago I bought a slightly used billet aluminium splitter from someone on this site. I recently had it put on when we had some body work (hood replacement) done. It stuck out further than I thought it would. Anyway, I was talking with someone who wondered if the mounting hole were simply round holes or slots. He said that he had put such things on street rods in his younger days and found that 1"-2" slots workd better, particularly if the splitted stuck out much from the car. While being a good driver, sometimes he might hit a curb, or something might hit the splitter otherwise. If the splitter was solidly attached the the body if could affect the alignment of the nose piece. If the splitter was connected through slots, it would give the splitter a chance to slide back, absorbing the impact instead of transfering the impact to the nose piece, possibly pulling it out of alignment.
As I have slightly bumped a parking block since the splitter install, I have noticed the noticed a slight mis-alignment with the nose piece. I have stopped parking anywhere near curbing or parking blocks. I am going back to the shop and have the nose piece re-aligned though.
Any thoughts on this? It seems like a quite simple but good idea. The splitter could be attached in a fashion that it could slide with an impact, then adjusted and retightened.
Would like some thoughts on this, especially from aftermarket makes of this items.
Thanks!!!
