Am I an ASS?
I have replaced over 2.5 quarts of Mobil 1 in my 2001
with 3700 miles.
If you dont check it for long enough, you can sieze the engine and have a perfectly good reason to bore, stroke, drop the compression on your "new engine" to 9:1 and bolt on a supercharger. Hmmmmmmmm....sounds like a plan
But an expensive one.

If you do not check your oil on a regular basis, especially in the early miles (twice a week?), you are going to seriously harm that motor. I went through almost no oil for the first 1500 miles. I checked it almost every time I started it. Then one day, after a spirited run, I checked it and was down a quart. I was doing about a quart every 800-1000 miles after that. I finally changed it at 3800 miles and have not used a drop since.
This is a great engine!
Also, my seat dyno indicates that this engine ran much stronger after the first oil change and after every one since.

Now, now, folks. I bought my S2K in Dec 99, used with about 600 miles. Read the manual, I thought, but didn't note the "check oil every time you fill up." If I had noticed, I would have been offended. What kind of car requires that kind of supervision?? I mean, cars burn oil when they're wearing out, right? When there's a compression problem, not a compression "surplus." I just joined the forum here, read this post and replies and went straight to the driveway to a) check the manual and b) check the oil. My baby's got 5200 miles. I changed it at 2800. It was clean and hadn't burned a drop. I don't know where it was when they changed it but no one said anything about it being low. It would certainly help if the manual gave an EXPLANATION as to why a new car should be burning oil, or why a car running at high RPMs is more likely to burn oil, especially enough to seize up a motor. How low is dangerously low? 1 qt? less? 2? What is this, a 2-cycle engine?! Now I'm nervous.
