I think you know my take on this and how I voted. However, I've also been in the camp where I've parked my toy for the winter so I can understand that side of the argument, too. I have a difference perspective on how I view my S from what you may have and I think you already know what those differences are so I won't go into what you should and shouldn't do with yours.
Just as an enticement: The last couple of days, the roads around here have displayed a strange trait from about sundown to well into the morning. Although it has not snowed or rained for weeks and most of the snow has disappeared, the conditions are just right where the moisture (frost?) either comes out of the pavement or forms on top of it from the "dewpoint" being as it is. It's above freezing but the roads are surprisingly slick. Some might cringe at the thought of driving under such conditions. I, on the other hand, have fun with it. The last couple of days, I've been drifting around almost every turn. WHAT A BLAST! And at these lower speeds, it's much safer than trying it on dry roads in summer. There are a few of us who just can't wait to throw this car around when winter really comes and stays. Of course, most of us have taken steps to protect the car as much as possible - Xpel, Zaino, don't follow too closely to large trucks, be on the constant lookout for other idiot drivers, etc. AND the ever necessary SNOW TIRES!
It was 37*F and sunny here in Northern NJ today. I took the top down, pushed the start button and went for an exhilarating drive. It sort of renews the spirit and refreshes your outlook.
Keep the beater, but take the S out on nice days. It's good for the S and for you! Winter is way too long.
My vote is for your first choice. I had mine last winter and was able to enjoy many nice days. In fact, it was 71 degrees last Dec.5 here and I had the top down at lest a couple of times each month last winter. Just be careful and enjoy your car.
My commuter beater is - simply put - a true POS! The damn thing is tough to get to a comfortable cruising speed on the freeway, smells like gas, has the original cheesy am/fm radio, keeps me guessing each time I get in to turn the key every morning...I'm SOOOO thankful when it starts (waiting for the day that it won't!).
Like the S, I get a lot of head turning looks from other drivers, albeit for much different reasons .
Despite its age and flaws, it really doesn't look too bad - no body damage and very minor rust. The best part of the beater, however, is that I'm a true believer in the adage "absence makes the heart grow fonder". I have my baby Zaino'd and under her blanket in the garage, and I look forward to our reunions with incredible anticipation. Last friday it was a pretty nice day (dry roads, too!) and I pulled her out for a quick 30 minute leg stretch. WOW, that was THE best time spent outside of the bedroom this month!
