Another saving weight thread!
I, like many S owners, am interested in losing a lot of weight on the car. I've searched and read many threads so I don't need the main ideas like new wheels/brakes/coilovers and removing things like AC and carpeting that I'll need. I want to keep the car looking stock on the interior. This leaves me with somewhat of a dilemma, but I had some ideas...
I've read about people cutting off the ends of bolts that have extra length. Has anyone done this? How much weight do you think could be saved? I read about a guy cutting bolts off an old mustang and removing around 100 lbs of weight! Are there any hidden panels, random pieces of metal, padding, rubber panels or plastic prongs behind the dash, or any small hidden things that can be done? Is there stuff behind the door panels that can be removed?
I'm basically looking to take out lots of stuff that basically nobody would be able to notice and still not compromise the car's stability (I don't want to take out braces/strut bar support kind of stuff). I know I can look around on my own and make my own judgements, but I'm wondering if anyone's done this kind of stuff and has any suggestions. And yes, I've seen the thread about krazykarim... that's entirely too extreme for me though
I will be getting new wheels/intake/header/exhaust/suspension eventually, I just wanted some more ideas on what I could do!
Love, Justin
ps, no comments about losing weight either... I'm 6'2 and only 150 lbs

Hmmm....well you noted you will be doing this in the future...but a nice single outlet titanium exhaust will probably be the most effective diet you can do to your S...If you are willing to dish out enough $$ you can save almost 60lbs with that part alone
....Dont expect but a lb or two out of the carbon fiber hood/trunk...the factory hood is so light as it is...most people do this because that love the look of a carbon fiber hood (myself included)...As for the extended bolt thing....well I doubt our s2000 will have many...if any extended bolts on them...Of course an old mustang will.....I think if you want to really save alot of weight (and lose one of the best features IMO) you can remove the convertable assembly all togeather and invest in a Seibon carbon fiber hard to...It beleive it tips the scales JUST over 31lbs...Compared to the 80+lbs of the motorized convertable top...Or course wheels..but you also mentioned you were going to replace those anyways...As for the interior, if you wanted to remove what little sound deadening that the s2000 has...go for it, but dont expect too much of a weight savings, if you dont want your work to show..(gutted)
Good luck

Light weight wheels will be your first best bang for the bucks in terms of weight saving. Every pound you save on the wheel translates to around 4lbs of dead weight. Swapping the stock for say the Spoon in 16 you'll save about 6lbs x 4 x 4 = 96lbs
I find it hard to believe the bolt thing. 1000 bits at 1.6 ounces each would equal a hundred pounds. I don't have the ability to weigh a bolt, but I'd be surprised if many of them weighed more than 1.6 ounces total, much less the little bit you'd be able to shave off.
The S2000 is a rather minimal car - it has to be to achieve its 2800 pound weight. I haven't done extensive exploring, but I have been in/under/around the car a bit and don't recall too much unnesecary hardware you'll be able to take out without effecting the car's looks or abilities.

How often do you use windshield washer? you can suck out most of the windshield washer fluid if you do not use it everyday. You can also remove your spare tire and tool box, replace those with a can of fix-a-flat and carry the AAA card if you have one, this can save you about 30 lbs. Do not fill up your gas tank in full every fill up, if you have half-full gas tank or less all the time, you can save about 50 lbs or more compares with full tank.

Weight is the main factor i'm also working on. I have a set of FD RX-7 wheels waiting for tires to go on the S. In my opinion they are the lightest wheels for the price. weighing in at 13lbs per wheel. I also have a Ti single Exhaust wich saved 48lbs. intake which probably save 2-3lbs. all and all most of the weight from the S comes from the convertible motor and frame and the reinforced frame of the car. your next best bet is to conver to a hard top and pull the whole covertible part out. Thats next after the wheels. Should save ~100 lbs.
