Well... this would be pretty custom, but IMO would look pretty cool, and work well.

If you had a top with a soft top, you could get the rear window zippered like a jeep. Then you unzip the window, and slide the board in, using a soft rack on the trunk, and then a custom one between the roll hoops. With a black zipper, you wouldnt be able to notice it unless you are really paying attention.

With an s2k, you will need a better security system, with a proximity, so you wont have to worry about people breaking in through the zipper, they will just cut the top. After all, when people steal stuff from wranglers, they cut the windows just to be a royal PITA.

My plastic window does have a zipper, and it can be opened... Idk about 02+ though.

Try it!

Yeah, it seems like if my crazy surfboard spoiler doesn't work, I could modify a tow hitch to carry the board. I'd be a bit susceptible to cross-winds, but i guess if it's that windy, it's time to kiteboard instead anyway (which stores much easier in the trunk)

With all this crazy talk about mounting it to the trunk and on the door, why not mount it on the hood? It's the longest part of the car and you can just have the board sticking out in the front (nose to the front). The hood is plenty angled to keep it pushed down onto the hood with some soft-rack like straps.

You'd probably get alot of looks too.

(this is actually a half joke, because I think it's crazy but it's actually as good as, if not better than, the door and surfboard-wing idea).

Have you considered a trunk rack? These guys make an accessory snowboard carrier that might work for you:

I recently installed one of these racks -- it ain't easy or fun, but it seems to be solid.

You know, I gotta say it, the hood isn't a half bad idea. I'd have to make sure the sheetmetal was strong enough to support the straps. But I doubt the board would really hang over the nose all that much....

Sure it would look a bit strange, but i'm not opposed to making a bit of a fashion statement.
