Default Any downside to buying 01 or 02 with low miles?

Assuming it has 30-40k miles, what maintenence will have to be done, will anything have to be replaced soon?

should've already had its tranny and diff fluid

maybe a new clutch 10k later depends on how it used to be driven

you can also look at a cabin air filter change radiator/coolant flush.

If you can...go with the '02...the 01 will likely have a plastic rear window, which is a pain. 02-03 also have more aggessive fuel mapping on the ecu, which gives them a bit more power than the 00-01.

$800.00 to $1200.00 for an OEM clutch.
If you upgrade it with aftermarket parts, could go up to $2000.00.

Unless the car's been beat, you won't need a clutch for 50K miles. I wouldn't even worry about it.

The 00-01 transmissions aren't as good as the 02+ tranny's just as the 04+'s are better then the earlier ones. You can upgrade the top too if you want to. If I was buying an S2000 now, knowing what I know now, I'd probably get it compression checked and maybe get someone to pull the valve cover and check the retainers.

Running them low on oil and misshifting which damages the motor seems to be a very common occurance on the '2ks. Either one will eventually kill the motor.

Seems like S2000s on craigslist are selling for uber cheap now. A guy I know bought his MY2000 maybe 6 months ago for $16000. I just saw one a MY2002 with 18k miles on craigslist for $14000 (good condition). Bluebook rates it at $21000. I've seen a lot of cheap S2000s around that price lately. What's going on?

Well, we're going into winter here so, it's a bad time to sell.

I was reading an article the other day in the Post about the psychology of selling. It was about people sitting on houses that used to be worth 7-800K and are now worth 50K less because of the housing downturn. These people couldn't believe that they'd lost money on the houses and refused to lower the prices to market levels. They were emotionally unable to reduce the price even though, in their heads they knew they were over-priced. It's why used home supply is huge right now but, used prices are only down about 2%. NEW home prices though have dropped 10% because the builders have no emotional attachment to the houses.

It's probably the same thing with car's. People will price it where they THINK it should be without looking into what they're really selling for. Look in the for sale forum here sometimes. You see many people with out there prices.

I wouldn't pay more than 16K for an private party 00 today. Decent 02, maybe 19K.

i bought sight unseen in november 04 a 2001 s2000 from nj. found it on autotrader and flew out there drove it back $13.5K 50Kmi. i took considerable risk and right out of the dealer i was on the cell scheduling a dyno run back home. at the colorado boarder i drove through the first snow storm of the year. never do that again.

-dyno run and or compression test BEFORE you buy.
-look real hard at the carfax and title
-test drive the vehicle: let it warmup 3bars, then test the vtec a few times rpm 5.5-6.5K, it should shift in/out easy, this is normal usage, the car should perform
-look very hard at the body for colision fixes
-look at the air filter and inside the airbox

-talk to the owner, ask for a shop manual cd, you will want this
-plan on replacing filters, engine/transmission/dif oils and plugs. you might want improved brake pads. ya all this is not on the honda oem schedule.
-the wings on the dirvers seat back get alot of wear, you will need leather conidtioner.
-drive with the top up if alot of wind noise you will need to replace the front latches. the top material must be in good condition, any option to replace it is expensive
-look at the 16" wheels for unacceptable curbing, the rear tires will need replacing, expect ft/back 205/225 tires and they should all point forward direction, you might want to upgrade the tires.
-the ft bumper cover may need a re paint.
