Default Any issues buying a low mileage MY2000?

Hey Guys,

I just signed up for the forum and have been reading about some of the potential issues to look out for when buying an S2K. I have the chance to buy a 2000 S2K with 8000 miles. I still need to look it over real good and look for any problems. But I know some cars are just not good at sitting. They develop more problems sitting than they do being driven.

So I'm asking for any opinions on whether this could be a good car even though it has sat much of its life. Anything more specific to look out for based on how little it has been driven?

Thanks for the help.

I would look out for:

1. I'd be skeptical that a 10 year old car only has 8,000 miles. It's not a Ferrari

2. Oil seals tend to go bad when not used as do A/C compressor seals, bearings can corrode from lack of lubrication, etc. If the car has sat for years the current tires may be out of round and/or dry rotting

3. Was the differential or transmission oils changed? If they are original that's a long time for petroleum based oil and it's probably breaking down.

I would personally not buy that car without a compression and leak down test done on the motor.

I don't want to sway you away from this as it may be a gem...but I'd personally be very skeptical.

hahaha.. 55 posts/day! you're awesome!! anyways, welcome to S2Ki.

8k miles on a MY00? is this a red one that was posted on Ebay? if so, i recall a thread on here couple weeks ago that talked about car. 8k miles from 2000 is VERY RARE and you definitely have to proceed with caution.

like JLUDE says, a car that doesnt get driven so much tends to have seals/lubrication issues. check it, do your due diligence.

I work at a car dealer (not Honda). The Sales Manager said it was his insurance agent's car and mostly just sat in the garage. I plan on running a CARFAX this afternoon to confirm mileage.

I don't think there are any service records with it, but I don't have a problem with changing out all the fluids if I buy it.

If I do decide to buy it, I can get a compression test done.

I drove it already, and it seems to drive pretty nice. The tires don't even seem that bad considering their age.

I read about clutch buzz. Would that be the sound I hear when decelerating around 3-4K RPM? It isn't a bad sound, just louder than most cars.

Just curious, what's the asking price of the car?

I'm curious b/c my wife's uncle has a '00 GPW with about 7800 miles on it, and he's always wondered what he could sell it for. And BTW, it's beautiful, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if given the chance. He drives it once or twice a week during the spring, sumer, and fall months. When he does drive it, it just isn't very far.

KBB retail is over $16,000, so asking price would probably be at least that.
Since I'm an employee, I'm hoping to get it for around $13,500.

8,000 miles, I believe it. When the 2000 and 2001 model year S2000s were being sold many dealerships where telling their customers it would only be made for two years leading people to store their car more. There are actually many threads started on here about it.
Good luck with the car.

I'd get it for $13,500
As long as there is not sign of any corrosion anywhere.
And it was a dry, warm garage.

I'm always one to say that there is an enormous difference between MY00-MY01 and all of the other years. For me, the first two years just don't feel right. Drive a few before you make your decision. 8k miles sounds nice but I'd rather get the right car with 20k or so if necessary.
