while i am sure there are many good cops the few bad apples have ruined it for all of them.

One of the local departments has gotten in a lot of hot water because they relied on traffic ticket revenue as part of there budget

Well, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles...there's really nothing that I can say to that. Just that hopefully, and I'm sure there are better cops and departments out there in this country.

Are you still being harassed in Nashville?

I'm preparing myself to apply for becoming a police officer here in Northern VA. So far, I know that it takes, dedication, hard work and a lot of sacrifices to become a police officer. No glory except for the fact that someday you might be making a difference in someone's life.

I was told flat out by our our state police on the GSP (NJ'rs will know what that is) that if your doing under 75 they won't mess with you unless they feel your vehicle is unsafe at that speed or you have a GLARING violation. Over 75 they are going to pull you over, because even if your the best driver on the road a blown tire at that speed is hard to recover from. And they don't want to be the one that has to scrape you off the pavement or notify your next of kin.

I've been on the Garden State Parkway. BTW, I love to drive on your Pallisades (sp??) PKWY.

I am OK with that policy. But I have seen people in VA get pulled for no front license plate!! That is ridiculous. And it wasn't a case of the guy speeding and then only got the plate ticket. NO NO NO

In one instance the car was off and my friend was in a Convenience Store P-lot.

If they were able to get a licence they would find that compliance is almost mandatory if you want to keep your licence.
They are everywhere - you don't know how free we are in all areas of life until you have been to Europe. In many places, you can't do yard work or home improivement outside on weekends.

No one mentioned photo radar - it is everywhere in major cities - when i was in Hamburg, I got two, and did not know about it until my dear brother got the bills in the mail!! And in most countries, they index the fine to your income. Going 30 over can get you a ridiculous fine of thousands of dollars! If you voted for Al Gore, this is your kind of law enforcement - class warfare, smack the wealthy, and the hell with civil liberties. Of course, Europe's system tends to consist of two classes - the super-rich and everyone else. Mostt wealth is inherited, where here in the US most millionaires are self-made.

I have almost always had good experience with state trooper and policemen, and have been treated fairly and often let off because I was contrite. Attitude on both sides of the door panel means a lot.

People rip through my neighborhood, which is upper mid class+, at twice the 25 mph posted speed. i have no problem when they set up radar and ticket those folks - my kids play here for cryin' out loud! But setting up a speed trap at the top of an interstate hill, and pimping to the chase car a mile ahead just plain bites - it is a shameless money grab posing as "protecting the public".

There are some very nice cops out there, don't let the bad one ruine it. If you're speeding or breaking the book suck it up and take it. Example:

I don't pretend to know the particulars about this but I'd say that it sounds like a good idea in principle. Despite the prevalent attitude that tickets are simply a way to make money for jurisdictions, they are designed to be painful and a deterrant. I don't think you could say that a $30 ticket to someone who makes $10K a year hurts any less than a $300 ticket to someone who makes $100K a year. It's like NBA players getting $500 fines for technical fouls. That would make most people wince and shout. But to the NBA player making mega bucks it's chump change and hardly even worth an after thought. I just saw something on the news last night where an insurance company did a study on numbers of speeding tickets and found that for the group they looked at it was strongly correlated to the income level of the driver. The higher income drivers had more speeding tickets over a period of time. The idea was that because the cost of the tickets was less insignificant that the drivers just keep speeding (until they get to the point where their licenses came into jeapardy). The idea of "equal pain" as a deterrant makes some sense to me. How any of that is related to class warfare and civil liberties I have no idea....

Hmmm, sounds just like the kind of system Bush wants the US to have then to me .

Where you stand depends on where you sit. You don't like people speeding around you neighborhood endangering your kids so you think it's OK that they nab those people with radar there, but because you (I'm guessing here ), like to open it up a bit on the interstate yourself, that's a "shameless" money grab. It's all designed to do the same thing, to slow the flow of traffic. People just don't like getting tickets... Myself included .
