this was discussed before. mine did that one time, I came here searched and apparently it was made poorly. You need to get the body of the cap and twist it. by the middle way through screwing, you'll feel a little resistance. Then it'll screw in more than make that clicking sounds.

you need to make sure that you don't get fooled by the first clicking sound.

I've found the thread from like 01 before they made this site search friendly. before, I had to go through like 4 pages worth of crap and repeated threads to find that info.

Same here, '02...probalbly not coincidence?
Previously as suggested in another thread I'd grab the outer part of the cao and tighten after the clicks.
I think it may be a problem w/ the neck instead.
Been getting worse recently, time for a new cap.

Its not the cap. Its the fuel filler neck. I had a 2002 as well and the cap would work itself loose. A temporary solution is to tighten the cap using the outer edges. Same way as if you are tightening the cap on a plastic soda bottle.

The permanent solution is to replace the Fuel Filler Neck. I believe there is a TSB for it.

I would have to possibly agree with problems with the gas cap for the 02s. When I first got the car, I kept on throwing CELs due to my gas cap loosening up. Luckily for this site, that is the first thing I check when I throw a CEL and not panicking. It happened maybe twice in a couple months where I believe was more than enough. I finally started to really push and screw the damn cap in and letting it click for 5-6 times. I havent thrown one ever since. Occasionally, I would find the cap still loose when I fill up but not loose enough to throw a CEL.

Changing the neck has got to be a pain...if this is it then it's the worst thing in 5+ yrs/53k of ownership.
Waiting to heat about the TSB.

I'm the OP of this thread from 6 years ago. I replaced my fuel filler neck 4 or 5 years ago and haven't had a problem since. There is indeed a problem with some filler necks not have the right thread pitch.
