Many people have. Take a look at gregstevens pix for a view of the red. I believe that Jay Li had some not very nice paint under his, but most that I have seen including my red have looked good. It's very easy to do, now putting it back, that's a different story.

I think the commitment to taking it off should be genuine, since putting it back wouldn't be easy. I did it on my red, and it looks great IMO.

ImA, some people have tape on the steel that frames the windshield. If you look at the picture above, you can see silver paint around the windshield. Apparently, the car ships with black(?) tape in that area, so you would not see the color there. If you remove the tape, there is a perfectly painted border around your windshield.

If your car has no body matched color between the windshield and the convertible top, then you have the 'tape' on your car. My car never had this stuff in the first place, so this whole thing had me very confused for about a year, until I finally asked too.

The tape is on all frames except black. Black cars are tape free. Rumor in Japan is that the dealer was to remove the tape if the hard top was installed, to achieve continuity of the top to the car.

Blau-blau. IMO, white is the only color which does not look good with the tape removed. It only looks O.K. if you have the matching hardtop on - but then, how often will that be? You don't want to take the tape off, just because you know you can. If you take it off and then later change your mind about it, I believe there's no way you can put new tape back on again; you'd have to get the whole frame painted. (BTW. Imagine what a white frame will look like with the black soft top up. Really odd.)
