Default Anyone here paint their head loops?

I'm sure there has to be someone here who has done this already but you know those black plastic loops that are behind the seats?

Has anyone painted those any other color besides the boring black?

I have a Rio Yellow and thinking about getting them sanded and gel coated in matching Rio Yellow.....kinda like a Porsche Boxster

I don't even know if those pieces are removeable or how so anyone here can chime in?

thanks,
rick

Your "Roll hoops" are probably what you're referring to.
People have taken them off, however I don't think many can get them back on, and if they do it's a PITA and not the best looking end result... somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Also the vinyl they're made of seems like it'd be a pain to paint... imo of course

They come off and go back on just fine. The thing to know is that they should not be split apart. That seam is welded together, not glued.

Yeah, whatever you do, don't separate the seam. Every now and then, you can run across a spare set in the for sale section. I have thought about painting them gloss black before but probably won't b/c of the hassle. Maybe if I have enough money to blow on spare roll hoops I'll try it one day. Only one I know that has painted them is Kodakan 4. He had his covered in a CF type process. I don't know if it's painted or what but it looks real smooth.

I had thought about fiberglassing over them with speakers mounted inside them, then painting them (and the top of the secret compartment) body color.

I did the speakers, but I used SPods. I would love to see how it would have looked.

Ok guys, I don't mind trying since I like to do things different.

I'll probably just buy a spare set to have painted but anyone know the part number?

Is the steel bar and plastic roll loops all one piece? Can anyone tell me how to remove the whole thing for the body shop to do the paint work? I know my guy can do the painting since he has done some pretty crazy stuff for my m3 that many said was impossible to paint or craft....

I would look at my s2k but it won't be delivered till next week

I am going to paint mine in the next couple of weeks. One of the big problems is getting any silicone residue off of the plastic before you paint or prime. There have been a couple of threads regarding painting interior panels that have some helpful advice in this regard. I would also make sure and use a catalyzed primer on them, not rattle can. It tends to stick better and will minimize any chance of reaction with base/clear coat paint.

I am going to paint mine with mirrachrome paint and they should end up looking similar to polished aluminum. I am not sure if painting them black would make enough of a difference to justify all of the work to do it.

If you want, I will sell you my old ones once I swap them out or email hardtopguy, he can get them surprisingly inexpensively. The retail on them at the dealer is around $150 apiece if I remember correctly.

Here is the part info:

Looks like you can get them new for $120 a pop: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/j...ry5=SIDE+LINING

I'd wait around for a used one though as one usually pops up every now and then for about $50 each.

ebeldesign: thanks for the awesome tips and diagram - that really helps!

Once I get my car next week I'll try pulling those off but I may just buy your old ones to test my painting process. PM me when you are ready to sell them ok and we'll see....

Your idea of painting it chrome is pretty cool too! I was originally thinking body color but the metallic look would also be pretty tight.

Post some pics when you are done and I will do the same

good luck,
rick
