Size DOES matter.
After reading about the shortshifters and countersunk knobs and looking at the instruction manual from Rick's.. I thought.. what if I take out the shifter and cut the thread all the way to where the rod gets thicker?
I would be able to lower the oem shiftknob, because I like the shift pattern on it.
And I did, the thread = M10, the steel is not hardened or anything.
The oem knob is about 12 mm (1/2 inch) lower now.
Shorter = better for sure!
When the shifter was on my workbench (at work, during lunch.. HONEST) I also noticed a lack of grease (what was there was dried out black Molycote I think), and some play between the metal/nylon parts.
So I greased it up again, with payed for grease (thanks Boss) and installed it.
Almost went for a drive but lunch was over.
The drive home was good!
A smoother shift (grease) and a more "natural" grip (lower).
This might actually be my first S2000 mod!
In time I will try to make a new lower=end nylon part to get rid of the play there.
The pivot point is kinda hard to copy I think.

Here it is.
As mentioned... its the stock shifter&knob, just a little shorter.
Thinking about it a bit more....
Maybe I'll make a really thin M10 locking nut out of a M8 (drill it out with 8.6, tap M10, screw it on an old M10 bolt with a locknut, lathe it down to 4 mm), so the knob can drop (as in drop-a-knob
) another turn, maybe two.
