He also stated that this will be offered at the owner's expense only but would not comment on its cost.

Also interesting: the rear plastic window is only covered under the 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty. He states that the 7 year/100,000 mile warranty covers the powertrain only.
Sounds like a Standard Operating Procedure response, and it shows how ineffective one letter is. The cost estimate they toss about is often, "About as much as a hardtop." Well, the hardtop lists at $2,995 as I recall and it's not a substitute IMO. They probably make 100% mark-up on the hardtop and would like to upsell you to it. I find it interesting that no one will give a direct quote on "the kit". Maybe they will change their minds after a hundred similiar letters... but the tide may be turning there as well, much to my surprise. Its like the stock market, just when you're sure it will go up. . .

If enough people are interested and enough people write, who knows but it will take more than the couple dozen who said they did.

i met someone who replaced his roof after someone broke into his car and cut his roof to get in.......
well to make a long story short, the new glass windowed roof doesnt sit flush, and in order for it to sit flush he needs to spend another 1300 canadian for a new frame for the roof cover.

so dont all jump in so soon......

Definately true. While I feel for the 00-01 owners, it's unrealistic to ask for a replacement. ALL plastic windows go foggy. You knew this when you bought the car and Honda knew this when the chose to use a plastic rear window. Ask any Porsche owners with plastic windows if Porsche ever gave them a free softop replacement because a newer model had a glass rear window.

I just also noticed that you guys are calling this a defect. It's a matter of polishing/cleaning your rear window correct? It's ridiculous to say it's a defect.. that's like saying your windshield keeps getting dirty and you refuse to clean it.

Hardtop is your best bet. Push for the discount on the hardtop rather than pushing for a free replacement of the softop w/ glass.

Well said...
This letter probably will catch the attention of the CEO of Japan, but.....
He probably wont do anything about it because ...

Softop frame @hondas Cost is $700.00
Softop window/canvas $1000.00

Labor is at least 8 hours Billed @$85.00

These prices are familar to me, being that i replace my softop.
When the bill came it was around $1700( i didn't replace the frame)

There is a total of probably 10,000 plastic window owners
Models 00-01
You are looking at $17 Million bucks just in parts alone.
Honda sales are down 60% from last year.

Its just not reasonable for Honda to drop in $17 million in parts to fix a simple window problem.

Yes, i totally agree with everyone that this plastic window is a freakn MESS!!!

This statement would be true if there wasn't (what appears to be) an oversight in the design of the top mechinism. Namely it folds the window in half. If you take a look at other convertables, the top mechinism is usually designed to minimize this. The plastic window is indeed fine for me, but the rest of the convertable top mechinism is destroying the window everytime I use it.

I received a reply letter from Japan (in a cool airmail envelope nonetheless!)

Basically, it stated that the final decision rests with the local distributor. They forwarded a copy of the letter to them, but asked that I direct all future correspondence to them.

I was impressed that I got a reply back from them -- not bad customer service!

Let us know what your local distributor says, Gowgom.

Big time oversimplification. I'm writing to clarify, not debate so don't waste your time "correcting" me. Deaf ears here.

I knew it was plastic.
It's not the same as cleaning.
The letter clearly states vision as a design problem.

I would say it's an Engineering defect and though I'm happy with the car in general, I would like Honda to meet partway on the defect.

I know about Engineering defects. Trust me.

in response to, rear window defective,my dealer tried to clean it ,cant, tried removeing the wrinkles, wont come out,I would say its defective! honda knows its a problem, why else would they put glass in the 02s,my dealer says that his contact with honda leads to one thing ,replaceing the whole top with a "non defective glass version" lets all hope so!
