I used a storage place as my personal garage once upon a time... I was at a job staying at a hotel for about 6 months and missed the s too much so I got it a unit. Whenever I felt like driving the s, I'd go park the corolla inside after taking the s out. It turned out to be a great idea and I never had any problems. While swapping cars, sometimes I'd see other people do the same.

May not be what you're looking for, but I stored my S over this past winter so I could reduce my insurance costs. Winters are Oct through May here, so I was a long time without my favorite toy. I had fresh fluids all around, since I had just bought the car in July, and put the lower suspension arms on jack stands so the struts would stay compressed, but the wheels would be off the ground. The battery stayed in my livingroom all winter. I would periodically check on it, but didn't turn it over until I was ready to pull it back out in the spring. Fired up just fine and I was able to save a few bucks between storage costs and insurance drop.

A 10' x 20' drive in unheated storage room here in Cleveland rents for $143/month. 10'x15' $121/month. This is the same storage yard I store my camper during the summer and I know there's a S2000 in one of them as the car owner spoke to me once when I drove mine over to check on the camper. Obviously location and supply and demand will influence rent.

The yard I use is fenced and gated with key code entry, 24 hour surveillance (so you know who broke in) and the storage rooms have padlock hasps on the overhead doors. I used to rent a small room for my daughter's "stuff" during the summer between college years and kept it a couple of winters for boat stuff.

Did this when I moved to CA. I had a year in an apartment complex until I bought a house with a garage. I stored it in a very nice unit that was big enough to also hold my motorcycle and other stuff.

Bottom line - the peace of mind was worth every cent by not having my S2000 parked on the street.

I was considering storing my S in a storage unit. Ended up not doing it, but researched it and found two typical comments.

1) I saw several complaints about storage facilities affiliated with U-Haul. There seemed to be a disproportionate number of break-ins with stuff missing at those facilities.
Kinda makes sense to me. The employees at U-Haul type places are transient and have no interest in the company's reputation. Go to a family run business, they get a reputation for break-ins, they are done.

2) Get a disc type lock like ABUS. You cannot cut those with a bolt cutter. You will need a grinder and about 10 minutes to cut a quality disc lock.

Great timing for me to see this thread. I was considering this option.

If any of you decide to rent a storage unit make sure they keep you informed of any maintenance they do on the premises. I rented one to store my motorcycle in while I was deployed, when I got back I opened the door and noticed it was covered with white paint specks. Come to find out they repainted the buildings and some of the overspray seeped in through the cracks in the doors and got all over everything. I was heated but I'd be even more angry if I had a car in there.

Definitely. I would certainly recommend covering vehicles for any long term storage in a rental facility. I used one for a year and never had an issue of any kind with my S2000.

Excellent advice, had this happen at a storage unit with just home overflow stuff in it. Also, be sure to check with you insurance company. Some companies require you to park the car at your residence. My collector/classic policy requires me to garage the cars at my home.
