yes i took the cover off once on a cold night, and the car seemed much more lively. could have been the extra noise too.

the stock intake box is designed/tuned to quiet any noises like your hearing.

My drop in filter had a whistle - actually so does my FIPK now.

The whistle is normal with the cover off on the stock box. I'd imagine you might also hear it with a drop-in filter and the cover off of the stock box.

Whistle or hum - its normal. All the cover does is muffle the sound, but its always there.

Just some good advise: If your going to be running the stock air box, keep the lid on. Having the lid removed causes the engine to suck in plenty of hot air from the engine bay and power will significantly decrease. I know it sounds 'cool' with the lid off under acceleraton but its not worth it IMO.

Some people rock the stock airbox with a Spoon snorkel running to the front grill. Do a search in the forums as there are plenty of threads on this.

my KN FIPK makes less noise now because I butted up the tube to the throttle body. it made a nicer growling noise when I left a gap there (unintentionally).

Not true, but a popular myth.
