Having owned both new, I can tell you a minty example of an ap2 should offer just what you seem to be seeking in your description.

I had an 02 AP1 and now have an 04 AP2. from my experience the ride in the AP1 didnt seem as rough but, i think that was due to the AP2 having 17's and more aggressive summer tires. There is a noticeable amount of more mid range power as well. Its not a whole lot but it is noticeable. I really dont think one is faster then the other if both are driven right.
Ap2 owners will be sending you death threats j/k

If its not going to be your DD than maybe it worth it to get a cheaper well taken care of AP1
But, the looks of the ap2 alone was enough for me to forget about ap1's. As far as power goes, I beleive that the average person will have a hard time telling the difference between the two

AP2's throw in shorter gearing 1-5 along with the modest torque gains. And later model AP2 V2-3's add VSA (defeatable), much more neutral suspension tuning, nicer looking 5 spoke 17" wheels with wider tires, a programmable ECU that can be reflashed cheaply by folks like Hondata for increased performance, and a better sound system. All AP2's have updated styling, running lights, and interiors that don't look quite as dated as the AP1. In addition, after 7-10 years of production Honda may...may have fixed the soft top wear issue in the 08-09's. I'd say buy a used high mileage AP2 V3 and hold onto it for the long term.

I own an AP1. Driven an AP2 and while there is a little more torque doesn't feel as fast up top to me with the 8k redline. Just seems more dull there. Looks definitely AP2. Just wish we were as lucky to get europes s2000's here. AP2 looks with 9k redline. Best of both worlds!

which one do you find more fun? I def think the AP2 looks better, but haven't driven one. THis will NOT be a DD (if that helps)
I honestly would have to say the AP1 was a little more fun but if i had both sitting in front of me i would choose my AP2 every time. all the little things that make it more refined and look better more then make up for the very small loss in fun factor.

I just got done with my full ap2 conversion on my 02 though. 9k redline with ap2 body styling ftw!

btw, I daily drive my ap1 everyday, and have for the past 2 years and love every second of it.

I had a 00 and a 08 CR at thesame time and did drive them back to back.

The CR was a vastly better dd due to more torque on the lower end.
For autocrosing the ap1 was the better choice. It may not have been faster but it was more fun.

Plastic rear window, older style oil jet bolts that have possibly been linked to scored cylinder walls few other simple things.
