Is the AP1 transmission really crap?
The S2000 changed only slight in it's 10 year run.
AP1's are a much better buy as far as value, what you get for the price.
To me the couple minor improvements from 2002 - 2006 did not justify spending $8K - $10K more for the car.

Instead of asking "Is my transmission crap?", the question you should be asking yourself is "Why is my friend trying to convince me my car sucks?"

i purchased the exact car i wanted. ap1v2
i dont like the ap2 bumpers/lights, i like the ap1v2 interior better than all others, especially the red dash. the 9k redline is great too btw
The only thing i want, is an ap2 transmission, for the synchros and different gearing, not because the ap1 trans is garbage, but the trans has been updated through the years.

also the synchros are supposed to be made of different material in the ap1 and the ap2 i think, not sure if this makes much difference. iv driven a few ap1s and ap2s and i like the transmission in both. and tell your friend with the mazda to suck it, there's always that one guy with a crappy car trying to put down others for minute details

Not true, there were many changes over the years that were pretty significant overall.
Think about how different a 1986 Nissan 300ZX was from a 1996 Twin Turbo?
A 1999 M3 and a 2009 M3?
Do you see where I'm going with this?
The S2000's upgrades over the years did make the car "nicer" and more driver friendly but IMHO, when you can buy a 2003 model with low miles for 50% of the cost of a 2009 model....you are getting a TON of bang for your buck with an older model S2000 which is only marginally less equipped and a hair less performance than a newer model.
that's the beauty of the s2000, its changed internally and stayed fairly the same on the outside to where many cant tell the difference between an ap1 and an ap2
ap1 or ap2 you are getting a great looking car that performs beautifully
and tell your buddy with the mazda3 to suck it again lol
I dont think the ap1 trans is crap. However there are things that you can do to help drivability. Look at trans fluid, clutch fluid, diff fluid, clutch adjustment, grease the shifter and the clutch fork (near the slave)
