Approx trade in value
We don't use nada out here in california but there is a simple way to to get the value. Plug the car in as it stands into KBB.com under good not excellent condition. Then subtract ~2K and any issues like needing new tires or the like. Then you have a realistic value. I went through this a few times at several dealers and got ~19K for my 2001 with 48K miles, but and I stress this the dealership gave me there holdback on the car and added it to the trade in value. So in real life they gave me like 16.5 for the car which I consitered a fair trade in value.
That and if you are upside down on a trade in and are applying for special financing through a dealership you will simply not get it. Most companies require that you only finance what ever the base invoice price of the car is to be approved.
Personally I had to shell out close to 7K to get out from under my S2000, I wish I did not have to do it but it was better then the alternative of paying to have it stored off site and keep it insured and making payments.

Just as a reference, I have a 2000 S GPW with 59K miles and was offered $16000 for it at a local Toyota Dealer when exploring the possibility of trading for a new Scion XB. They would not negotiate any off MSRP on the Scion though ($15400). Yesterday, they actually called me back and said they would give me another $1000 for my car since I didn't bite on their first offer. I'm gonna wind up keeping my car most likely though. I owe $12k on it now.

Heh, its a little shady but I've had good luck negotiating at dealerships. I usually take like a post it and write down what I want for the car (has to be reasonable) and when they gave me a hard time I pull out the little piece of paper and say well, dealership X offered this much. They usually get very cooperative at that point.
Also wait until the last 3 or so days of the month. They always cut better deals at the end of the month to bump up their quotas.
