Default Attempted headlight theft or hit and run?

Just noticed this over the weekend, probably happened a day or two earlier wherever I parked my car. If someone was trying to steal the headlights, I am guessing they would have caused more damage to the paint, etc. Looks like someone backed up right into the headlight at a slow speed and kept going before realizing they were hitting my car.

Body shop is saying it could simply be a matter of moving the headlight back out and straightening the fender (approx $200 in labor) or I could need a whole new assembly because 90% chance some of the brackets are damaged from being pushed in so far so it would cost approx $700+ (new headlight assembly approx $500)

EDIT: Suddenly they do. Looks like a hit and run to me, like you say, theives wouldn't have given a toss about damaging the paint. Can you even get a headlight out through the front??

That's the first I have seen. You cannot dig out the headlights without opening the hood (without breaking headlights).

Leave it as is and run some ducting to cool the breakpads. You could be onto something here (just trying to look at the bright side here)

Hope it's just a re-fitment issue also. Will find out wednesday morning when the body shop takes a look through the hood/wheel well.

Ouch!

With the minimal amount of paint and lens damage seems fishy. If it was just a hit and run they had to have hit it at a very slow speed with a plastic bumper cover to not scratch the paint up bad. No cracks in the headlight lens?

You actually have to remove the entire bumper cover and have the hood open to remove the headlights unless you just cut the mounting brackets off (if you could reach them, which I doubt).

No cracks in the headlight lens and minimal paint damage, slight marks that could be buffed out I think. I think def a hit and run now.
