Default August Road & TRack S2000 stuff...

There are two editorials about the S2000 vs Miata thing.

Apparently one guy was at Laguna Sega with his Miata at S2k Days.? He claims no one could pass him, even on the straights.??? His Miata may have been modified and he conviently left that out.?

I know at summit the Miata's reach 112mph down the front straight and S2000's easily hit 125, so I would imagine his story is bullshit ?

Anyone have some other side to the story.

ps....my magazine is not in my hand or i would post the guys name and the entire letter.

with the lack of "search function", i couldn't find anything related to this subject. sorry for double (actually triple) posting....

Either way, it sounds like the miata was prepped.... wooohooo... a prepped miata with an experienced driver can mangage to block some S2000's being driven by beginners.

I think you mean August's "Automobile" (page 35), not R&T (or maybe its in there too?).

The author of that letter is a long time active participant to various track events, president of their regional Miata Club, and is just a damned good driver. I would not doubt that no one passed him if he were running with the intermediate groups at S2KCA's Laguna Seca Track Day in january. Seeing that he is really friendly with the regional S2000 owners and clubs (and has repeatedly invited us to their events), i would suspect that the letter is likely editted to fit in the magazine and thgus may have lost some of its original content or meaning.

In talks we have had with him (he also recently attended Sac2KDays track events by Speedventures and S2KI, (the replacement for the failed S2KDays), he has always expressed nothing but praise for the S2000, and we cannot fault their Miata's much either (although the Miata owners wish they had a bit more power). i think the S2000 vs Miata thing is just something conjured up by the magazines to fuel debate among those who have those insecure and immature tendencies of always want to have a "bigger/badder stick".

Oh, and regarding the no one passing him even on straights...if his car is modified, which i think it is, AND he is a good driver so he comes out of turn 11 fast, it may be difficult for an S2000 driven by an above average driver to actually catch up and pass him on the straighaway. BUT, some of the S2000's were running above 130 on that straight before the Andretti Hairpin (T2).

If its who I think it is (mid 40's, glasses, sandy colored hair, green miata) then I agree about the magazine editing the letter for a desired effect. He's a really nice guy and has served as an instructor on more than one occasion. And if it is who I think it is, his engine is pretty much stock. He tends to run with the intermediate (or slower groups) because he gets romped in the straights, but has no problem keeping up or passing in the corners. In fact, that's his dilemna. The slower groups hold him up and refuse to let him pass in the twisties, and in the faster group he's a bit of a roadblock on the straights (not deliberately).

If it isn't who I was thinking of, then this post of mine is pointless :-)

<edit - it wasn't the guy I was thinking of (Marek). The post in the racing forum gives the name, and the guy comes across like an ass, or a clueless moron>

no, it wasn't Marek, who I agree is also one of the coolest Miata guys that come to many events that teh S2000 folks go to as well. Ron, the guy who comes across badly in the letter, is the Sacramento Area Miata Club president I think, and I dont think he would go to such lengths to sound so badly, especially since many of us have met and driven with him. Nonetheless, the letter does sound bad as it reads currently.

I don't know him but Andretti in a Miata couldn't beat my stock S2000. It's a fun little car but performance isn't what it's made for. I'm skeptical. We know what we have!!!

The only Miata at the Laguna Seca event was driven by an older gentleman and just happened to have a turbo (along with tons of suspension mods). Nice of him to leave out those minor details. I just read the letter and was thinking the exact same thing. Nice guy and all, but pretty weak of him to make it sound like it was stock for stock.

maybe that guy who wrote the letter could post his exact letter and we could see if they did "edit" it.....

Turbo vs stock is not the way it was printed!
