avoid S because of clutch?
so i have been spending plenty of time with the search tool... and i hate to regergitate this issue, but i never really found a "happy ending" thread.
apparently many of you have been replacing your clutches regularly, at 3, 5, 10 or 15k miles. i also noticed a few of you sold your S's at some point after the posting. this is a bit disheartening since honda's have always been so reliable.
has this been resolved? i am considering getting as S but dont want to replace the clutch every month. cant pay that kinda $$. i never launch harshly, but i will almost always shift at 9k.
do i pretty much have to figure in the purchase of an aftermarket clutch into my purchase? and if so, which work the best (and actually last)?
oh yeah, kind of a side question, but the 5.3 0-60 time (or close to it) is based on a harsh launch - dropping in at 7k or so, right? well, what is the 0-60 time with a light launch? closer to 8?

Frequent clutch replacements are the exception, not the rule. And many of those were abused clutches. Maybe you should run a poll asking who's replaced their clutch. I'll bet 95% of us are on our original clutch. That's just not a good reason not to buy this car.
First of all, in the new S's, they changed the transmission, so I think the problem is either fixed or much better. I have a yr. 2000 and I have the problem, but it's not all that big of a deal. If you get a car under warrenty, ask a dealer to get TSB-55 done on it and you're all set. One other thing is not all of them have problems anyway, it's really just luck. The "buzzing" comes from downshifting in the 3 1/2-4000 rpm range (at least it is with mine) so it doesn't matter if you do upshift at 9000 rpm every time. Oh and you probably won't shift that high every time, but if you do, make sure to check your oil more often.
An aftermarket clutch isn't necessary, you probably won't ever need one.
0-60 with no launch at all (just normal engaging), your time will be about 6.7 seconds, which still isn't too bad.
Good luck, hope this helps!

thanks. i might run a poll on who replaced their clutch.
i wont be getting a new one, so the problems with the 00 models are important to me...
i am pretty much sold on the car - i just wanted to be sure this isnt a lemon with repair nightmares.... this is why i buy hondas - to not have to thinmk about repairs...
i remember when light-to-light racing my GSR i would always start out slow at the green light... let the revs mount slowly while cruisin in first, then by the time i am in vtec range (while still just cruisin) i know if the other car wants to race. then when i punch it, i have all of vtecs power immediately. i did this once with a vette and he was definitely quicker... but that was the first time i ever "hung in there" with that kind of car. i imagine taking that approach with th S would get me even with the guy -

What I was told by the dealer's service manager before I bought the car was that one of the changes for the 2003 was a new type clutch disc. However, a clutch will usually last a long time unless of course it's mistreated, then longevity is accordingly.
If you have to replace the clutch and want to stick with Honda parts and you have an S2000 older than 2003, you may want to ask for the updated 2003 clutch disc.

hey brushman---
thats what i am looking to here... some of the older threads showed people replacing their clutch repeatedly (with little or no abuse). just want to be sure this thing isnt out of hand.
re: 0-60 times... i have driven the car and was BLOWN (NA of course) by it. i am not v8 power hungry - hell i am driving a miata now - but i was jujst curious if anyone tested the car 0-60 without the clutch drop. the search tool on this site isnt returning anything for me...

Well, if someone has had to replace their clutch several times I would have to think the driver had something to do with it. I only have 12,000 miles on my car I got a year ago, but the clutch is still working fine and I see no reason why it won't continue to work fine for years to come.
only 26 votes, but only 30% of those polled had the original clutch at 30k miles...
