Backhanded Compliment
I was at a charity picnic today for CHOC (Childrens Hospital Orange County) and the local Porsche club was volunteering. After I parked my car, one of the guys said to me "I love the paint job on your Miata!"
After I told him it was actually an S2000, he said, "Oh... those are quite a bit faster. We're not big fans of those... they beat us at autocross sometimes."
Anyway, most of them were nice guys. The guy who mistook my car for a Miata drives an older 911. Someone showed up in a GT later on
I'll post pictures in the car forum later.

i'll never buy a porsche....just for the ignorance of automotive stuff.....and I'm not in a mid-life crisis....and my wiener is satisfactory to my woman......and I don't want to pay so much for one car that I can own three nice ones for the same price........
there is a 1964 ferrari in my local newspaper for sale for about 17K......hmmmmmm......if I had a ferrari could I insult myself with ignorance of other car makes just b/c I drive a ferrari.......? Maybe!

Man, that WAS a backanded compliment!
I'm not sure how to react in that situation. I'd just say the hell with him. I'd also be curious to know what he was driving. If you say it was an older Porsche, they weren't really that fast, and we'd probably whoop his ass in an autox (or in a straight line for that matter)!

My wife and I shopping at CarMax a few weeks back. A 2001 S2000 and a 2000 Boxster were the cars we were comparing -- similar mileage and price between the cars.
My wife preferred the S2000, suprisingly. No bling factor from that Porsche badge.

A true enthusiast can appreciate any car for its unique capabilities, regardless of make.
Porsche makes some of the best sports cars on the planet, and has done so for a very long time. Unfortunately their prestige does make them fodder for many a limp dicked, toupee flapping douchebag(as is the case with most other "elite" automobiles). That doesn't change the fact that most of the true Porschephiles aren't in that category, and that the cars and their heritage are quite amazing.

You guys are being too hard on the Porsche guys. They are great cars, and for the most part the owners are good guys. I mean... read the story again. They were volunteering at an event for the childrens hospital!
I think most of the bitter feelings toward Porsche owners is envy. Hell, I would have bought a new Boxster S if it wouldn't have been such a financial stretch. Lets not let the small pecentage of arrogant Porsche owners cast them all in a bad light.
