I generally avoid the 2nd ON position to save battery life... you turn on a lot of things in that position, including the AC/AIR, dash, and who knows what other computer widgets. I don't see it hurting anything other than draining the battery more than the first position.

You're better off not knowing, because they were a pain in the ass to adjust correctly.

I remember too many hours spent trying to poke a distributor in the dark after a long day of working on the engine about 10 beers into the job.

Well, how can leaving in the key in that position hurt the car when that's the key position needed in order to operate the top? I guess we are talking about leaving it for an extended period of time here? I can't think of any situations when you need to do that, however.

Thanks,

/Rog

I never operate the top unless the engine is on. The newer manuals say not to, but mine doesn't, and I guarantee it's better for the battery this way.

I believe when the key is put in the 'on' position it starts the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system. (I'm not 100% on this) It also boots the engine computer and who knows what else. I would bet the airflow sensor is turned on too, and that thing operates by heating a coil - not sure how healthy it is to leave it on with no airflow going through it. Maybe no harm, but don't know. I would not leave the key in 'on' position for more than a couple minutes if I didn't have to.

John, so far as I know the owner's manual doesn't say anything about this being a bad thing. Nor is it my personal opinion that it'll cause any problem beyond some additional power drain on the battery.

Did you guys look at the last post made by spider, or even the first post? This thread is nearly two years old.
