Default Battery Charger/Trickle Charger Question

Good morning...

Have a question.. was wondering what people are using when storing their car over the winter...

I was planning on using a trickle charger this year but noticed my roomate has something that I hadn't seen before...it doesn't connect to the battery, but rather, through his cig lighter (power outlet)...and then the other side plugs into the wall. Would this setup work for S2000s as well? What do you guys use? Thanks in advance..

I've seen this before, but wouldn't do it myself.

To maximize your battery you need to keep it in a room temperature area, off concrete and best to take it out of your car.

* Don't Charge batteries indoors as it will release toxic fumes when charging *

I bought a 1A tickle charge that's about the size of your palm and it seems to do a good job on our small batteries.

Canadian Tire

or go with a 2A one with automatic shutoff control.

Canadian Tire 2A

We use this for our drag cars over the winter. Never had any problems, and it compensates for changing ambient temperature.

I looked at that one (actually, I have one quite similar)... I'd have to take the battery out of the car then, no? I can't get the hood to close if I use that since the connectors both point up (I couldn't get them to lay flat with all the other stuff attached).

Never thought of not being able to close the hood. Our dragsters don't have hoods. Ours came with a quick connect thingy. It has two rings that you hook up to the posts on battery you don't have to use the clips. If you look real hard at the picture you can see them just below the tender itself with a blue and red ring. With these you shouldn't have a problem closing the hood.

You may want to consider getting a trickle charger with a pulsing battery desulfator. They prevent sulfation buildup on your battery cells. I am currently using a BatteryMINDer, and years ago I used a PowerPulse by PulseTech.

There are several battery desulfators on the market, and if you do a search you can even find DIY instructions on how to build one.

Get a Battery Tender/Battery Tender Jr. It hooks into the +/- terminals of the battery and then runs a single cable to a plug which you leave in the car. When you need to charge the car you simply plug it into the wall and connect the end from the wall to the pre-wired part in the car. I have one on the Elise, it takes about 5 seconds to put on and knows when to stop when the battery is full.

Hey Mocky,
I've been using BatteryMINDer for the past two years, which has worked out for me so far.

I don't think we can use the kind of charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter, since our cigarette lighter isn't powered when the car is off.

thanks for the advice everyone...

Jack, where did you get yours? online? do you have it connected with the battery still inside the car or did you have to take the battery out.
