Battery Question - Please help
I've got my car at a local stereo shop, and they want to upgrade my battery because they think the "small" honda battery can't power a six channel amp very well. They insist that as the volume is turned up power will drain to other parts of the car, like the car's computer, and that it will crash. Is this possible? My last car, an Acura Integra, had a 6 channel amp and I never had any power problems. Would it be bad for the car to lose power? I can't see how it would be any different than if the battery went out while driving or something. It wouldn't ruin my car would it? Anyone think i should upgrade?
A car's battery stores energy so you can start your car. While your car is running, the power is supplied by the car's alternator. If your car needs more power than your alternator can supply, it will pull energy from your battery until the battery is dead and your engine stops. A bigger battery is not the solution because it will still result in a dead battery eventually. If you use more power than your current alternator produces then you will need a larger alternator (or maybe re-wrap your existing one) that produces more power.
It doesn't sound like these guys know what they are talking about. You should consider a second opinion by a different shop.

I agree with DogFoot on this one... these guys sound like they are more interested in selling you parts then giving you sound advise. That or they don't know what they are talking about.

Thanks for replying! I called and told them I didn't want the battery, and that I would see how things go after the install is complete. How would I be able to tell if too much power is being drained? Dead battery?
I hope that's not the only way.

I agree with everyone else. They are probably just trying to make some extra money off of you. Those batteries that car audio places sell can be very expensive too. I would see if you have any problems at first, and then try and correct them if you do.
