Default best gears

i have already searched the forum and learned a little bit about gears on the s2000, but i still could use some advice.

I would like to know what are the most aggressive and performance enhancing gears available for the s2000 that would still not be too hard to drive as a daily driver.

also, i know it has probably been asked before, but i was unable to find it in a search. what else is generally required that doesnt come with the gears?

also, it would be great if anyone could list the websites where the gears are sold

thanks

The lower gear ratio (higher number) you get, the shorter the gears will be, the faster the accel in each gear, the lower the top speed, and the higher RPM on the freeway at cruising.

So it depends on your driving style and what you want.

Stock gear is 4.11 or 4.10 IIRC.
I tend to drive on the freeway a lot, so I went with 4.44.
4.56 is by far the most common aftermarket gear on the forum.
The most aggressive is 4.77.

You need to decide what you want out of the gear. It's all a compromise.

i have 4.56 and i like them alot, im very happy overall, but if your # goal is for more acceleration then go with the 4.77...i would have done with these but i drive on the freeway alot also so this was out of the question,

well, the 4.77s sound good so far, but i don't want to stress the engine too much. i don't drive on the freeway too much, but I'd like to say that my average driving speed is around 70 mph. what is the gears' approximate rpm in top gear at around 70 mph?

5000 I THINK for an ap1. There has been alot of discussion about the gears as they are basically the best mod you can do for performance short of an s/c

I had 4.44 gears and recently switced to 4.77's. The difference between 4.44's and 4.77's is huge in terms of dead stop acceration. Can't even imagine how slow a stock S would feel at this point. I cruise on the highway a couple time per week at around 75-80. If you are only going to hit 70, then this should be a no brainer, 4.77's. You'll have significanly better acceleration up to this point, maintain a top speed of around 145, and only a few hundred more rpms at that speed vs 4.57's.

A wider or stickier rear tire would be nice to fully use the new acceleration advantage though. However, given the weekness of our rear diff. I'll probably stick with the wheel spin. If you have the money, swap out the diff at the same time and go with a little wider tire in back. 245 SO3's appear to be about 1 inch of additional tread width vs stock S02's according to tirerack.com. Most like these in back anyway from what I've read.

I've never seen anyone complain about getting 4.77's installed. The difference is night and day. Especially if you are keeping it under 100 mph.

Arent the higher gears, larger than stock, like 4.77, doesnt that kill your top speed to super low?
