Default Best intake that isn't J's?

So unless someone wants to use J's... which being an individual of limited means... I don't want to... what is the best intake/CAI out there for say less than $500? Preferably... lots less than that. When I bought my 01 s2k it came with an Injen short ram... but it looks to me like I am still sucking in lots of hot air! The sound when the V-tec kicks in is great... but intakes aren't bought for sound alone. Anyway, and help advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Also... if anyone has a quick fix like some sort of heat shield that I can but stand-alone to help inthe meantime would be great. As usual, pls keep in mind I am a noob and have only had the car for 3 weeks. Its got 10K miles on it now and I am loving it, but I have the tuning bug... and more power is always better... Thanks

P.S. I don't have the stock intake so switching back for a comparison isn't an option for me. Thanks,

I would tell you to buy the spoon snorkel, but you need the stock box. In your case I'd say look for a comptech.

If you live in an area where rain is not a frequent problem, the AEM V2 gives the best gains and is not too expensive. It does put the car at risk for hydrolock if you drive in the rain or through large puddles.

Otherwise...as said...Comptech, but those are likely to become rare as Comptech is closing.

I agree. I have the K&N FIPK intake and it seems like a very well put together kit. It is not a cold air kit, however it does have a heatshield and is very easy to install.

I don't think that by going K&N FIPK you are leaving much HP on the table versus a true cold air system. I did not want any worry of hydrolocking my car. To me ~1-2 hp is not worth the chance (however remote) of hydrolocking a car. The only way 1-2 hp would ever make a difference is maybe at a track.

It's a little more expensive, but Comptech rules. You're not getting much power out of an intake either way, and the Comptech looks amazing and sounds good too

either Comptech or K&N both are good. Power is going to be about the same, so pick the one you like the best.
