Due to Wile E.'s generous hard work, I now have a set of 13 Best Motoring VCD's.

Here are some first observations:

1. There is a great disk with a "Super Battle" between an F50, a Diablo, a 355, a Skyline, and various 911 GT2's and 3's (!). For those that have never seen "Super Battle", they just line the cars up and race them against each other around a world class track. It's pretty amazing.

2. Some have subtitles, but since my TV is 16:9, I can't see them anyways. Although I can't understand it, the constant Japanese chatter is pretty entertaining. It's especially great when two $200,000 cars are about to touch during a "Super Battle".

3. The other excellent Super Battle is between S2000, ITR, Euro R Accord, Subaru Legacy Turbo, IS200 and an Amuse Altezza. (Sorry, I don't know Japanese model names too well). The key here is that they are racing IN THE RAIN. A down pour, in fact. Guess what? The S2000 STOMPS!! It comes from last place to battle the Euro R for first and never looks back. Did I mention that this was IN THE RAIN!!!! Sorry, I just had to emphasize that point in light of the recent spate of moaning about S2000's poor performance on wet roads. Now, they make a big point out of showing the tires, which look stock to me, but since I can't read Japanese, I am not sure. Either way, it is a great race. The S2000 has a few slippery moments, but only during hard acceleration on exiting sharp turns. You really have to be paying attention to see the rear step slightly.

4. There's a good disk that compares Subaru WRX against Lancer EVO. They slalom back to back on a dry road and on snow!

Thank's Wile E.! (BTW, your cash is in the mail as of this past Friday.)

Whoa guys!

Those Best Motoring videos are alot of fun to watch, and drifting a turn is a lot of fun, but that is the completely worng technique for driving fast, or for conserving your tires.

Just remember- any time you start losing grip at either end you have to let off the throttle until you regain grip. You also lose 30% more grip sliding around like that than if you were at the tire grip threshold. Judicious use of throttle, brake and steering inputs will get you much better results.

I don't recommend driving like that- unless you hate your tires, and don't plan on winning at any level...

I think you are confused. Wile E. said he likes to drift on the on ramp, as evidence that the S2000 can be controlled in the rain.

They don't drift in the Best Motoring Super Battle. Best Motoring sometimes shows cars drifting because it's cool, but I don't think anyone claimed it was the fastest way around a track.

If you've seen Best Motoring, you'd understand that these are some insanely competent drivers that know the fastest way around a track.

Sunchild-

Actually, if you watch them closely, only the old guy is competent. The rest have a tendency to power oversteer out of the turn and trailbrake too far into the turn- understeer into the turn, oversteer out- not the fast way around the track. Slow in, fast out is the quick way, not the other way around.

In any case, it's fun to watch those cars go at it!

Got my VCD's today! Thanks Wilee! I second all of Sunchild's comments. The one with the F50 is outrageous. More than once they almost wasted that car (and the F40) during the "Super Battle"! There is another S2000 VCD w/a black S2K that gets its ass kicked by everything under the sun (ITR, Silvia, MRoadster, RX7, NSX, etc.) Very sad. But then on a wet handling course, it whips all the other cars asses Guess cold is the #1 enemy of the S02. And on a shorter track it kills the other cars. It was a good demonstration how the driver, then track layout, and then car were the most important factors. Neat stuff!
