I would have to say MY00-04! Don't discriminate, celebrate!

I wanted an 00, because that was the original car I fell in love with in 1999.

I'm sorry but it is slightly watered down.
Don't get upset, but the truth to the matter is that Honda addressed people's complaints about the ride, low torque and high revs at highway speeds in America, and implemented the changes to make it more suitable for the needs of the american market. (Engine displacement remains at 2 liters elsewhere) the car is more "civilized" for highway driving, this is what the market in america demanded, and that's what they obtained: A better car with better manners for their needs (Less shifting, less noise).

For sports car purists, who don't mind shifting often and high revs, the prior car was closer to its original intent of providing a race car for the street, even if it was louder, more cramped and all.
Don't get me wrong, the 2004 is plenty noisy and 8,000 RPM is still a stratospheric number, but if it wasn't for the pursuit of comfort, why didn't they also change the engine in europe and japan?

If a bigger displacement engine with a lower redline but more torque (so you don't have to shift to a lower gear when passing, etc) with revised gearing for quieter ride at highway speeds and suspension modifications for a less punishing ride and decreased tendency to oversteer is not watered down, I don't know what is.
And there's nothing wrong with a decaf version of the original (An analogy used by many sports car magazines that reported on the 04) it is still a magnificent sports car, just a bit more civilized, that's all.

I bought an MY02 since it had the small upgrades from the 00 and 01, but really I hardly had a choice here in Austin, TX. There are so few used ones for sale long enough. They come in on Friday and sell on Saturday! Regardless, I'm very happy with it.

Cheers
