Blackbox for your car!
Again, how can this protect you from the dents on the doors? I cant imagine it records the plate id of the car that hit you. If it doesnt it simply confirms he fact you already know: you have a dent on your door. :|
Black boxes are a really bad thing to install into a car you might use to speed (break the law).
Most people overlook the serious downsides to providing evidence of your own crime. This prevents you from being the only witness to your crime.
They have been pushing true black boxes for years in production cars. GM has had pressure to provide law enforcement with warnings or data. California wants dash cams to ensure citizens stay within the law.

Our cars already have blackboxes they can research in investigatiing accidents. that black box is called the ecu and all ob2 cars have one they normally store the last 30sec or so of data before a fault code comeson or if an airbag is deployed

Well, if this black box is aftermarket, and only you know of its existence, you may use it as an evidence when it suits you. When YOU break the law, you simply play it quiet
.
.That could change or you may legally be forced to allow the car to be searched for evidence.
Such boxes are only good for commercial vehicles. If you wish to debate are you are safer by giving up your right not to provide witness to your own crime, then you don't understand the law and what this allows you.
If you hit a wall, are the only person there and leave. You cannot testify against yourself. Your black box might not get the same treatment. Certainly an on-star GPS location of an air bag deeply would be used against you, so don't figure your black box would be any different.
Installing a big brother device, no matter how smart you think you are is really stupid. History shows the average person has little to no foresight and the average person not to be that smart - I would advise against anyone from installing a recording device in their car for regular driving.
But hey, if you want to all be stupid together go for it. Recording everything is only good when you NEVER step outside the law. I don't know anyone who is legal all the time.
Best of luck
Would the court even recognize the device as legit? It would probably have to be certified by a designated official saying it's calibrated correctly before the court would accept the data it provides. Anyone can rig an event recorder and calibrate it to their favor.

You'd have to look into the data and how it's collected. If it simply stored more ECU data, calibration might not be required.
in s korea, most taxis and supercars have them installed
since whenever you get in an accident, they are almost required now to see who is at fault, and by what percent !
I think the price is about 1/4th - around $100

I'm on the black box working against you bandwagon as well. I've been pulled over a lot, and I mean A LOT! And more often than not, I've been let off just by being civil and truthful. I've tried to fight as many tickets as I could and rarely got out of the ones where i was undoubtedly in the wrong. Typically though they already know if there's a margin of error on their part they will usually let you off especially if they believe it was an honest mistake.
Moral of the story: don't act a fool when driving and you'll be fine. There are other people on the road too. If it's dents you're worried about, get good insurance.

This is one thread that does keep changing with the times. Event recorders are being used. Not in speeding cases but accidents. Lots in the news. Somebody is in an accident and says they were only going xx and had their seat belts on. Turns out they were going YY and did not have a belt on.
The fight is on as to who "owns" the data. Lien holder? Police? Wrecker? Owner? Has not worked its way up the courts yet for a determination. Just a matter of time.
