Most likely, he or a previous owner overreved the motor and damaged a retainer. This doesn't always cause a valve to drop at the time, but can stay hidden until the valve finally drops. Than you basically ruin the block and often the head in the process.

Ap2 motors have tougher retainers. If you never overrev your motor it isn't an issue.

BLASPHEMY! Anyone who owns an S2k and visits this forum is assumed to be a car enthusiast. ALL real car enthusiasts watch the BBC Top Gear.

I agree. I'd love to see Clarkson put his feet up on an S2000 motor while interviewing guests for the "reasonably priced car".

So how did you drop a valve, 44K is hella low for a mishap like that. Is this a common problem with F20/22C's?
Not really sure, I tried calling american Honda and dealing with them, however since the car was out of warranty due to the year and not the milage, I got a big F-U from them. Oh well, guess Honda want's to loose customers for life. (And FYI this isn't the first bad dealing i've had with them, I met resistance all along the way with the S2000 for service issues as well...IE Clutch buzz and what not)

Funny thing is that I had the helmet and gopro on when it blew. I may upload it one day.
My F20C went at 31,000 mi. My warranty ended at 30,000 mi. American Honda requested my motor from the dealership and gave me a brand-new F20 and paid for the swap. I paid nothing as Honda was so interested in my motor, and the bill came to $13,000+. I even had a CAI, and the issue ended up being hydro-lock. Your experience is unfortunate, as Honda has done anything and everything to keep me pleased. Except charge me $2.00 per interior clip. But I blame that on the dealership, not American Honda.

So wait...it hydro-locked due to your cai...and they still covered the motor?
[/quote]

Sure did. Even after my warranty period ended. No more CAI for me!!!

I'm not sure how many over-revs it takes, as I'm sure we've all over-reved our engines on more than one occasion. I'm sure this particular motor has been over-reved quite a bit for this to happen at such low mileage!

That's AWESOME! Good on Honda for covering that, even though it was your fault! Not knocking you, just saying that's it's cool they did that.

Honda has bent over backwards for me over the years. We;ve been buying them for nearly 30 years. Both new and used.

Part of me suspects it's how you interacted with them. The Ap1 retainer issue is a known quantity for over rev failure. Any AP1 owner should basically have them replaced if they bought the car used. but sure blame honda for building a race production car (ap1) and than having to change it for the American market. They ruined the motor and killed the handling - basically for people like you who think you've been wronged in some way. Yes, I drive an Ap2 and I'd rather have the ap1 motor.

Glad you had a pleasant interaction with them, I was and am always as nice as can be in any type of a conversation, but to no avail this time. Have fun being a dickhead, seems to be your forte, I'll concentrate on the constructive comments in this thread.

That's part of the reason I'm irked about the situation, I had owned the car for three years and only been able to put five thousand miles on it due to paperwork issues. I finally get the car on the road and after the first week it drops a valve. I'm not some punk out here bouncing off the rev limiter and shifting from 4th to 2nd, I'm a competent racer who understands the mechanics of the vehicle, Always heel-toe, and had never missed a shift.
